Hometown St.Thomas October 2025

A Day in the Life of the Library by Amelia Bainbridge, Communications & Donor Relations Coordinator, St. Thomas Public Library October 19 to 25 is Ontario Public Library Week, and this year’s theme is Libraries for Life . It’s a reminder that libraries are there for us at every stage of our lives and in every part of our day. If you step into St. Thomas Public Library on a busy weekday, you’ll see just how true that is. In the morning, the library fills with the happy sounds of Baby Storytime. Caregivers sit with their babies on their laps, sharing songs, stories, and rhymes. These small moments help build a lifelong love of books and gives families a chance to connect with each other. Later, in the Maker Lab, you might find a small business owner printing out custom stickers for their product packaging. The library’s technology gives entrepreneurs the chance to try out new tools and bring their ideas to life. At the same time, staff are helping a senior learn how to download and use audiobooks on their phone. They want to listen to books in the car during their upcoming road trip and the library is right there to guide them, step by step. By afternoon, the library is buzzing with people who stop by to read the newspaper, use the computers, or find a quiet corner to study or work. For many, the library is a place where they can focus, explore, and keep up with the world. When evening comes, teens come in for Teen Writers’ Meetup. These young writers share their works in progress and ideas

with each other. The library becomes a place where they can grow their voices, encourage one another, and discover the power of storytelling. From morning to night, every corner of the library is alive with people learning, creating, and connecting. That’s what Libraries for Life is all about: no matter who you are, no matter what stage of life you’re in, the library has something for you. This October, as we celebrate Ontario Public Library Week, take a moment to think about what the library means in your own life. Whether it’s your first board book, a business idea, a road trip audiobook, or a story you’re ready to share with the world, the library is here for you. If you’d like to show your support for libraries, join us for a special flag-raising at City Hall. On Tuesday, October 21 at 10 am, the City of St. Thomas will raise a flag to mark Ontario Public Library Week. Come celebrate Libraries for Life !
