You may be surprised to learn that one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in Ontario, yet has one of the highest survival rates of all types of cancer. Most women who develop breast cancer do not have a family history of breast cancer; however, if you have a first- degree family member who was diagnosed, you may be at an increased risk. To book an appoint- ment at STEGH, call 519-631-2030, ext. 2517. PROOF our office will set up another appointment to investigate that abnormality. Of the women who may be recalled, a high percentage ultimately prove to be clear. Others may be followed closely for up to two years before returning to normal regular screening. Additional testing may include additional mammography pictures, a breast ultrasound, or a specialized test called Contrast Mammography. The reason that breast cancer is no longer the leading cause of death in women is due to early detection. Breast screening has been proven to save lives because cancer is identified and easily treated early. Did you know? Although breast cancer in men is rare, it can happen. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, less than 1% of all breast cancers occur in men. They estimated approximately 290 new cases of breast cancer in men would be diagnosed in Canada in 2024, and 60 men would die from the disease.
