PRESIDENT'S COLUMN

MAHALO, WITH DEEP APPRECIATION

Well, this will be the last time I write this article, as Kristi will soon be taking over — and the Club could not be in better hands. The holiday season is always a busy and exciting time at the Club, beginning with Halloween and continuing through the end of the year. I had the pleasure of attending the Halloween celebration and was truly impressed by the outstanding job our staff did with both the keiki activities and the adult festivities. Thanksgiving at the Club is always a wonderful opportunity to indulge in Chef Eric’s exceptional holiday dishes, and once again, he did not disappoint. Looking ahead, we have our Christmas events: the Tree Lighting on November 29, Christmas with Santa on December 7, our Candlelight Dinner with music and dancing on the 24th, followed by our Christmas Eve Dinner and the Christmas Day Buffet on the 25th. These well-attended events bring our Club year to a festive close.

RICHARD M. ROSENBLUM President

Introduce a Candidate for Membership Membership in The Pacific Club is, and has always been, by invitation only. After all, it’s how you became a member. Today, you can help ensure the future and ongoing success of The Pacific Club by encouraging qualified friends and associates to join the Club. As a member, it is both your privilege and responsibility to introduce someone to the possibility of membership. As we celebrate, it is also important to remember those in our community who are less fortunate. This season, we are so grateful for all of the food donations given by our generous members in November, for our Thanksgiving food drive. All proceeds went to Hawai‘i Foodbank, who are continuously working hard to help families in need throughout year. This month, please consider participating in the Salvation Army's Angel Tree program, which will be located in the Lobby. Thank you for your contributions in advance. As I close, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to Amy for her leadership this year and to Mike for his dedicated service in years past. Our success as a Club is a direct result of their tireless efforts. I also want to acknowledge our Board and Committee members, whose thoughtful guidance and behind-the-scenes work are vital to our continued strength. Thank you all for your commitment. Lastly, I want to offer a heartfelt Mahalo to our staff. I may not thank them personally as often as I should, so let this written acknowledgment stand in place of the many individual thanks they deserve. They are truly the secret sauce that makes our Club the elegant place where friends and colleagues gather for both business and social enjoyment.

CLUB MANAGEMENT

HOLIDAYS AND TRADITIONS

The holidays remain a time-honored tradition here at The Pacific Club—where hallmark occasions meet new memories. Throughout our history, the Club has celebrated the season in style. In the early 1900s, members gathered for December Jubilees featuring Russian caviar and 1820s brandy. During the 1920s, holiday banquets and New Year’s Eve balls lit up the lanais with lanterns and laughter. Through the financial challenges of the 1930s, members celebrated alongside the University Club during a brief merger. Even during wartime blackout orders in the 1940s, members found ways to connect with candlelit gatherings. All reminders that the true spirit of the holidays lies in community.

AMY DAMON General Manager

The postwar boom of the 1950s and ’60s brought the celebration of our centennial and the planning and construction of our current clubhouse*. Amidst this transformation, holiday traditions endured. In the 1970s, members gathered for lively New Year’s Day Open Houses, a tradition that toasted each year with family and fellowship. That spirit continues today. While the 1820s brandy is long gone, you can still enjoy caviar, along with Sommelier-curated wine pairings for Candlelight Dinner and Christmas Eve, and holiday craft cocktails by our Head Bartender—offering elegant touches to savor all season long. Family-focused events from the 1980s and beyond, like Christmas with Santa, featuring games, crafts, and presents for the keiki, or Trolley Night, with its festive rides through Honolulu’s holiday lights, remain beloved traditions across generations. We’ve also added newer favorites, like The Pickleball Holiday Party (launched in 2021), which reflects the energy of our athletic community. And, just as our members once envisioned a new clubhouse in the 1950s, we now embark on a new era of long-range planning to ensure The Pacific Club continues to meet the evolving needs of our members and their families for generations to come. As we honor these traditions, we also extend our heartfelt mahalo to you, our members, for supporting another time- honored custom: the Employee Holiday Fund. For over a century, members have generously contributed to this expression of appreciation for our staff. In fact, the 1917 Board minutes record a spirited discussion about whether to pay staff bonuses in war bonds, but ultimately, the Club chose to pay in “coin.” On behalf of our entire team, thank you for helping make the holidays meaningful, not just through programs and parties but through the enduring sense of community that defines The Pacific Club. Please take a moment to read Nikki’s Holiday Do’s and Don’ts and browse the Social Calendar in this issue—you’ll find there’s truly something for everyone this season. * The Club engaged celebrated local architect Vladimir Ossipoff (a Club member since 1939 and later recognized as a Life Member) to design our current clubhouse to honor the character of the Cleghorn estate while embracing the principles of tropical modernism. DID YOU KNOW In the library you will find an oil painting of William Lowthian Green, a charter member who helped establish The Pacific Club in 1851. A prominent merchant, scholar, and government official, he was known not only for his leadership in business and politics, including service as Minister of Foreign Affairs, but also for his deep curiosity and intellect. He authored one of the earliest works on Hawaiian volcanology and remained a respected civic voice throughout his life. This enduring tribute reminds us that our Club’s traditions and character were shaped by visionary individuals like Green—whose legacy still resonates in the spaces we gather today.

This painting was donated by his daughter, Mrs. J.N.S. Williams, to the Club for Christmas in 1927.

FEATURING NEW SCULPTURE

The club has added a new piece of sculpture to its collection! It is “Jax Bench” by the late Fred Roster (1944-2017). The bench consists of three dogs sitting on a log, carved in 1980 as a gift to his mother, and cast in bronze in 1990 in an edition of 3. Fred Roster was born in Palo Alto, California in 1944. He received an MA from San Jose State University in 1968. He moved to Hawai’i the following year and continued his graduate work in sculpture. He was awarded an MFA in 1970 from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, where he joined the faculty as professor and served as chairman of the sculpture program until he retired in 2016. Sadly, he died of brain cancer in 2017.

Throughout his career, he developed a personal vocabulary that combined different materials into figurative and narrative sculptures. He drew from his knowledge of ceramics, woodcarving, and metal casting to create works that express social and human concerns. His works are in many public and private collections and he truly ranks as one of Hawaii’s most important artists. He was extremely well-loved by his students. When an MFA graduate was asked “what is your philosophy of art”, their answer “my philosophy of art is ASK FRED”, illustrates how important he was as a mentor to many, many stu- dents and artists in Hawaii. He was a generous and compassionate friend and his studio door was always open. He was passionate about nurturing the next generation of artists. His tenure at UH was marked by his commitment to fostering creativity and critical thinking in his students. He believed in the power of art to transform perspectives and encourage dialogue, a belief that resonated through his teaching and his body of work. Fred was also a co-found- er of the popular traveling International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition, which mixed small-scale works by local and international artists. According to Fred, the dogs in Jax Bench “serve as a metaphor for human change, from the quizzical nervous, seated pup to the proud show dog, and finally the portrait of relaxed comfort that comes with experience and wisdom”. “Jax” is the name of his mother’s kennel where she raised her line of champion schnauzers in Angel’s Camp, Califor- nia. The “Jax Bench” is a prime example of Roster’s ability to merge the everyday with the extraordinary. Crafted from durable materials, this piece serves both as a functional bench and a sculptural statement. The bench’s dynamic structure encourages interaction, making it not only a visual delight, but also a tactile experience. Although he originally created the wood-carved bench as a gift for his mother, during its execution he was convinced by a good friend to cast the bench in a bronze edition of 3. One was sold to a private collection, one to a hotel on Maui, and the 3rd is at the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. Stop by the tennis courts soon to welcome the newest acquisition the Club has made to intrigue and delight our members! Author - Sharon Twigg-Smith

THE WINE DIARY

WHAT WOULD THE SOMMELIER DRINK?

Recently I was asked, “If you could only drink wine from two areas in the world, where would you choose?” Although it took me a few minutes to decide, I ended up selecting Champagne and Burgundy. With the holiday season coming up soon, I couldn’t think of two better places to help me celebrate, and here’s why. The Charm of Champagne Few beverages carry the same mystique, sophistication, and sensory pleasure as Champagne. Beyond its golden bubbles and celebratory pop, Champagne symbolizes elegance, success, and joy. Its distinct flavor profile — a complex blend of brioche, fruit, and mineral notes — arises from the terroir of France’s Champagne region and the Méthode Champenoise. The fine, persistent bubbles create a light, invigorating mouthfeel no still wine can replicate. Champagne’s versatility, from Brut Nature to Demi-Sec, suits every palate and every occasion, from aperitifs to pairings with seafood, cheese, or even fried chicken.

KERRY ICHIMASA Club Sommelier

For centuries Champagne has been intertwined with luxury and status. Opening a bottle invokes celebration, tradition, and triumph. It’s the quintessential drink for weddings, anniversaries, and New Year’s Eve. Beyond symbolism, Champagne’s carbonation accelerates alcohol absorption for a gentle sense of euphoria, and the bubbles release dopamine for joy and excitement. With antioxidants and relatively fewer calories, Champagne appeals to many as both a pleasure and a lifestyle. For some, it becomes a state of mind — an identity rooted in beauty, joy, and life’s sparkling moments. The Sophistication of Burgundy For some wine lovers, Burgundy is not just a region — it’s a lifelong passion. To drink Burgundy is to explore terroir, tradition, and craftsmanship at their deepest level. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay reach unmatched elegance, complexity, and emotional resonance here. Burgundy’s winemakers, beginning with the monks of the Middle Ages, have spent centuries studying how soil, slope, and microclimate shape character. Its limestone and marl soils produce wines transparent to their origins, each climat offering a signature as unique as a fingerprint. Red Burgundy (Pinot Noir) reveals layers of cherry, raspberry, and strawberry with earthy notes of forest floor, mushroom, and spice. White Burgundy (Chardonnay) ranges from the mineral precision of Chablis to the opulence of Meursault and Montrachet, always marked by vibrant acidity and minerality. Fine Burgundy rewards patience, aging gracefully into truffle, spice, and honey. At the table, Burgundy is remarkably versatile, pairing effortlessly with poultry, seafood, creamy sauces, and aged cheeses. Its scarcity — small family vineyards producing limited quantities — heightens its prestige and collectability. Grands Crus like Romanée-Conti, Montrachet, and Chambertin hold legendary status. Yet beyond rarity and status, Burgundy has soul: a living reflection of people, place, and time.

Two Regions, Endless Celebration Champagne brings joy and sparkle; Burgundy brings reflection and depth. Together, they capture everything I love about wine — craftsmanship, emotion, tradition, and the ability to turn any moment into something memorable. With the holidays coming, you’ll likely see me enjoying bottles from both regions. After all, if I could only choose two places to drink from, these would be it.
