9 WAYS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR BODY AGAINST VIRUSES LIKE COVID-19

The best way to keep your body healthy during this time is to stay moving and reduce inflammation. Being sedentary and making poor diet choices has the potential to hurt your immune system and make you a target for sickness and disease.

7. Stretch. 8. Take frequent breaks for breathing exercises. Inhale and exhale deeply. 9. Continue your home exercise program 2-3 times per week. In order to be healthy, there needs to be a large emphasis on movement. When your body is flexible, strong, well- balanced, and fueled by a nutritious diet, it is able to fight infection and reduce the impact of viruses. We are dedicated to helping you live the best life you can. During this time, if you cannot make it to your physical therapy appointments, continue your exercises at home. We care for you and remember you are part of our physical therapy family.

HEALTH & WELLNESS FIND THE RELIEF YOU NEED FROM LOW BACK, HIP, & KNEE ARTHRITIS PAIN

VERSE OF THE MONTH “ “ “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” 1 Peter 1:3

What Causes Lower Back, Hip and Knee Arthritis?

If you’re constantly facing lower back, hipor kneepain—youmight be feeling arthritis. According to the Centers for Disease Control, roughly 54.4 million U.S. adults are diagnosedwith some formof arthritis per year. As we age, the cartilage in our joints wears down, causing painful bone on bone rubbing, inflammation, stiffness, and pain. While there is no cure for replacing cartilage yet, it is possible to alleviate the symptoms of arthritis, by improving your joint movement, muscle strength, balance, and coordination. It’s even possible to eliminate symptoms entirely, dependingon the amount of arthritis you have. If you have regular aches and pains, keep reading. We have a solution.

Because arthritis is a catch-all term, pinpointing what causes arthritis may be difficult. In most cases, arthritis is caused by overuse, wear and tear, or injuries. Arthritis can also be caused by: • Infections, such as Lyme disease • An immune systemdysfunction - rheumatoid arthritis • The inheritance of osteoarthritis • An abnormal metabolism, which leads to gout

What Is Arthritis, Exactly?

Before knowing how to relieve arthritic pain, you’ll need to understand it. Arthritis—or the painful stiffness, or inflammation, of joints—isn’t a single disease. The term “arthritis” is an informal explanation of joint pain and disease in general. Over 100 types of arthritis exist, according to theArthritis Foundation. People of all ages, races and sex can get it. It’s also the leading cause of ongoing disability in America. The most prevalent form of arthritis is osteoarthritis, which is caused by either injury or normal wear and tear.

For arthritis suffers, even simply walking can cause pain in the lower back, hip or knee. Often, arthritis is a downward spiral of progress pain, limiting movement and strength, which in turn causes more inactivity and pain. However, by improving joint movement, muscle strength, balance and coordination, this cycle can be broken, reducing pain and inflammation. STAFF SPOTLIGHT

KEVIN HUGHES, DPT Meet Kevin Hughes, one of our DPTs at our Cordele clinic! “I completed my Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Georgia in 2005 and my Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in 2008. I have worked mainly in outpatient andhomehealth settingswith a

INGREDIENTS • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 3 tbsp. freshly chopped cilantro • juice of 3 limes, divided • kosher salt • 1 lb. large shrimp, peeled & deveined

focus on orthopedics, and I’ve beenworkingwithBridget and Stacey in some capacity ever since I graduated from college in 2005. I have received additional training in Graston Technique and dry needling, and I am currently pursuing Vestibular Rehab certification. I live in Cordele withmy wife, Kathy, who is also a physical therapist, and my two children as well as baby number three on the way! We enjoy spending time outside playing with our dogs and riding dirt bikes and ATV’s. The thing I love about physical therapy is that we have the ability to empower our patients to take control of their conditions and learn how to fix themselves. I really enjoy teaching patients about how the body works and the purpose of the activities that we do in therapy so they can understand what their problem is and how our treatments will help. One of the most rewarding things about the job is seeing patients in the community I have treated in the past and hearing that they have kept upwith their exercise programand are still doing well, or if they did have further symptoms, they knew how to manage it on their own from what they were taught in therapy.

DIRECTIONS In a small bowl, mix together olive oil, cilantro, and 1/3 of the lime juice. Season with salt and pepper. Add shrimp to a baking dish and pour over mixture. Toss until completely coated and let marinate 20 minutes. Meanwhile, make slaw: In a large bowl, toss cabbagewithmayo, remaining lime juice and sriracha. Season with salt. Heat grill to high. Skewer shrimp and grill until charred, 3 minutes per side. Grill tortillas until charred, 1 minute per side. Serve shrimp in tortillas with slaw.

“I received treatments at SWGA Fyzical Rehab and have made a complete recovery.”

Our new reality of telehealth and in-home visits is new for everyone, but we have Toni Lanneau to speak on how telehealth can benefit you, and how we’re still here to help during times of social distancing! “In June 2019, I was experiencing some lower back pain but I contributed it to tweaking it while working out. Then, I went to Athens, GA for a conference for two days. We did a lot of walking over the two days in Athens. I woke up early the last morning in Athens with excruciating pain in my lower back.

FREE PHYSICAL THERAPY SCREENING

It was tears streaming down my face like I had never felt before pain. I could not even get out of bed without feeling like I was going to pass out. My sweet friends that were in Athens with me called Bridget Hathcock at SWGA Fyzical Rehab. She gave them instructions over the phone for 3-4 exercises to do with me in order to get me out of bed into a wheelchair safely. Bridget stayed on the phone while we performed the exercises, counting with us, and assessingmy pain level throughout the process. The exercises provided over the phone gave me enough pain relief that my friends were able to transfer me from the bed into the wheelchair and into the vehicle to ride home to Cordele. Once back in Cordele, I received treatments at SWGA Fyzical Rehab and have made a complete recovery. I am confident without the quick thinking of my friends and the over the phone therapy from Bridget, that I would not have been able to get me out of the bed. We would have had to call the ambulance. I am so thankful for great friends who came to the rescue with their quick thinking and the reassuring, calm, and thorough therapy that Bridget provided over the phone.” Don’t continue to live in pain or weakness because you don’t want to visit the clinic. Give us a call, and we can find the best therapy alternatives for you! (229) 273-9445.
