A Gallery Doing More Than Selling Fine Art J. Pepin Art Gallery isn ’ t just selling artwork; it is creating positive dialog around something that affects all of us … mental health. Located in Portland Oregon ’ s Pearl District, J. Pepin Art Gallery was founded in 2013 by Jennifer Haskins Pepin to reframe the perception of mental illness to be one of mental health. The idea originated after Jennifer was in the corporate world for 12 years living with bipolar disorder. The environment created many challenges trying to maintain a good mental health and at that time, there was great misunderstanding of what mental health conditions meant and how they needed to be taken care of. Nobody talked about it. Eventually, it led to parting ways with the company and Jennifer began going to a Depression Bipolar Support Alliance support group. “ There was so much creativity in that meeting - writers, musicians, artists and I wanted to use that to start a positive dialog about mental health and break down the stigma that exists. ” Along with exhibiting their artwork, artists have written statements about how their own mental health may be supported by their creativity. Jennifer hopes these statements help others know they are not alone and that they feel better talking about their own mental health and taking care of it. When the gallery first opened it was focused around specific mental health conditions but that conversation has evolved. Although Jennifer personally lives with bipolar disorder, she feels strongly that it is not about diagnosis. “ We all have a mental health, as we do a physical health. I hope that if

people feel more comfortable talking about their own, they can find ways to support it. Creativity is just one example. ” Jennifer currently represents 14 different regional artists and offers a range of styles, mediums, sizes, and price points. Her goal has always been to live and breathe like any other gallery. She has not wanted special treatment because of the focus on mental health and hopes to offer a caliber of work that appeals to a wide audience. “ I have been blessed with the artists who have wanted to be a part of this gallery and I love that I can offer such a diverse collection. The gallery attracts everyone from young people buying their first original artwork to collectors who have supported me over the years. ” A member of the Portland Art Dealers Association, J. Pepin Art Gallery has been recognized for its mental health advocacy and Jennifer has received awards and spoken at events. She enjoys partnering with local mental health organizations and has participated in the Seattle Art Fair the last three years. Although Jennifer is an artist, her energy continues to be focused on the gallery and using the art to put mental health in a positive light. “ As much as I want to work on my own art, this gallery isn ’ t just about me. It is about the other artists brave enough to share their works and their stories. It ’ s about inspiring others to do the same. It ’ s not only okay to talk about mental health, we have to talk about it. And we have to take care of it as we do our physical health. ”
