the only preserved Serbian crown, which was cast in the famous Paris- ian workshop of the Falize brothers from the iron handle of the cannon of Vožd Karađorđe, according to the design of professor Mihailo Valtrović. Completing the exhibition are original paintings by Arsenije Petro- vić, Đurđe Teodorović, Stevan Todor- ović, Uroš Knežević, Paja Jovanović, Uroš Predić and other excellent art- ists. This exhibition also presents, for the first time ever, reconstructions of the crowns and robes of Serbia’s medieval rulers that have been cre- ated in an effort to refresh the col- lective memory of this period of Ser- bian history and for the purposes of the museum’s future permanent ex- hibition that will present the history of these lands from the Neolithic pe- riod to the late 20 th century. Visitors can check out recon- structed versions of the crowns of Emperor Dušan, King Milutin and Despot Stefan Lazarević, all of which are works of famous filigree maker and artist Goran Ristović Pokimica, the crown of Empress Jelena, repre- senting the work of sculptor Jasmin- ka Brkanović, and the crown of Helen of Anjou, aka Jelena Anžujska, which was made in the goldsmiths work- shop of Marselj and Simon Čivljak, as well as reconstructions of the at- tire of Mihailo I Vojisavljević and of Milutin and Dragutin from the pe- riod of their early youth, which were created by costume designer Jelena Stokuća and associates. The crowns were all handmade, using tradition- al techniques determined on the ba- sis of written sources and frescoes from the monasteries of Lesnovo, Manasija, Studenica and Sopoćani, but also in consultation with numer- ous relevant experts. The exceptional importance of the original and reconstructed ob- jects exhibited is reflected not only in the fact that they provide precious information about their owners, thus representing a priceless source of in- formation for researchers from many scientific disciplines, but also due to the fact that only a small part of the legacy of Serbia’s ruling dynasties has
remained preserved. This is primar- ily due to historical events that have marked the history of the Serbian people – including the centuries-long period of Ottoman rule, wars, dynas- tic shifts, looting and destruction, persecution etc. The exhibition’s contents were complemented during the summer with the purchase at a San Marino auction of the seal of Grand Pince Stefan Nemanja, dating back to the second half of the 12 th century, and the reconstructions of the sceptre of Emperor Dušan and Empress Jele- na, but also the acquisitions in early November of a crystal jug sporting the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and coins of the rulers of the Nemanjić dynas- ty. In the period ahead, visitors will also be able to check out copies of the crowns of King Mihailo I Vojis- avljević, Queen Simonida, Bosnian King Tvrtko I Kotromanić and Des- pot Đurađ Branković, which are cur- rently under construction. The conceptual authors of the ex- hibition are Dr Dušica Bojić, Slađana Bojković and Tijana Jovanović Čes- ka, while it was designed by curator Izabela Martinov Tomović, with the museum’s own curators participat- ing in the preparation and implemen- tation of this important exhibition.
