How do you decorate your table for a festive dinner? For starters, don’t worry if you haven’t got lots of space – the closer people are to one another, the better the party
Makeover. “That’s usually about food, but it’s also about what’s around us. When you set a beautiful table, wheth- er it’s for eating with your family or having guests over, it makes them feel like they matter, because you’ve tak- en the time to show you care.” The first step to a memorable dinner may seem coun- terintuitive – arrange the chairs in such a way that you create an intimate atmosphere. When people sit close to- gether, they communicate better, and the closer diners are seated to one another during a meal, the better the party. Feel free to add benches or chairs in different styles when that’s necessary to accommodate all the guests. Before continuing, it's also often helpful to select a theme—anything from a creative concept to an overall colour scheme. It would be too easy to spend a small for- tune on special tableware and decorations, but most de- signers would tell you that the best dinner service and table decorations are often hidden in plain sight. Unex- pected objects, even ones that ordinarily “live” in other rooms in the home and you wouldn’t normally think of using on the dining table, are the most fun. When you’re surrounded by your nearest and dearest, it’s a nice op- portunity to bring out your aunt’s embroidered table- cloth or your grandmother’s antique silver wine tasters to us as serving bowls. And last, but by no means least, turn to “materials from nature”. Seasonal flowers, branches and even fruits and vegetables make ideal table decorations. If you don’t have a garden, it’s perfectly acceptable to opt for what you can buy at the shops. Seek out bright colours in the fruit and vegetable section and enjoy them as fruits of the harvest, both on the table and in the food. That rep- resents a visual reminder of the season.
T he very mention of festive decorations might cause us to instinctively think of elaborate Christmas tree decorations and couch cush- ions and bedding with jolly Christmas themes, the fact is that an imaginatively prepared ta- ble and the way you serve the meal will do just as much (if not more) to bring a festive atmosphere to your home. That’s why devoting time to coming up with a table arrangement is just as important as planning what you will serve on it – whether for a New Year’s dinner, Christ- mas lunch or any other special feast. “There's a saying that ‘we eat with our eyes first’,” says Shea McGee, host of the Netflix show Dream Home
