Workforce Development
A big year ahead for workforce development
• Industry familiarisation and job readiness
The aim is to reduce barriers to entry, improve retention, and give employers access to better- prepared candidates.
As Tasmania’s hospitality and tourism industry continues to evolve, so too does the way we attract, train, and retain our workforce. In 2026, Hospitality Tasmania will roll out a strong program of workforce development initiatives focused on building clearer pathways into the industry, strengthening skills on the ground, and supporting businesses to grow their teams with confidence.
Developing Future Leaders
Retention is closely linked to career progression. In 2026, Hospitality Tasmania will progress work on leadership development initiatives that support the transition from team member to supervisor, and from supervisor to manager. These programs will focus on building confidence and capability in: • People management • Rostering and workforce planning • Performance feedback • Understanding business operations Strong frontline leaders play a critical role in shaping culture, reducing turnover, and improving overall business performance. 2026 is shaping up to be a year focused on action, collaboration, and outcomes. By continuing to invest in early engagement, job seeker support, skills development, and leadership capability, Hospitality Tasmania is working to build a workforce that is skilled, adaptable, and ready for the future. Most importantly, these initiatives are designed with industry, for industry — ensuring Tasmania’s hospitality and tourism sector remains a vibrant and attractive place to build a career.
Strengthening the Pipeline from School to Work
Engaging young people early remains a priority in 2026. Our Hospitality Awareness Sessions will continue to be delivered in secondary schools across the state, introducing students to the wide range of careers available in hospitality and tourism, along with the skills and training pathways required to get started. Our Hospitality Showcases hosted at TasTAFE campuses will again provide hands-on experiences, allowing students to rotate through practical activity stations such as barista skills, mocktails skills, knife skills, and front-of-house service. These events give students a genuine taste of what working in hospitality looks like and help build confidence and curiosity about the industry.
Supporting Job Seekers into Hospitality
Hospitality Tasmania will continue to partner with employment services and community organisations to deliver short, targeted programs for job seekers who are new to hospitality or re-entering the workforce. These programs will focus on: • Basic hospitality and customer service skills • Workplace expectations and confidence
