the 300 hurdles.” Kreft was one of three Russell High ath- letes who made the Eastern Regionals this year. Vanessa MacDonald finished 13 th in the senior girls 1500-metre long-distance run and achieved a personal best time of 5:35.73 minutes for seventh-place in the Open Girls 1500-metre steeplechase. That last result breaks the Russell High School record for the event by five seconds. “I compete in cross-country so I find I have enough stamina for the long races,” said MacDonald. “I’m never really winded, though maybe a bit tired, but I can still have a last ‘kick’ at the end of the race.” MacDonald noted that when she com- peted in the steeplechase at the Eastern On- tario Secondary School Athletic Associations championships, also at Kingston the week prior to the Eastern Regionals, she passed her last two chief competitors towards the end of track and they “looked tired”. Samuel Potvin, Russell High’s third entry at the Eastern Regionals, finished 14 th in the junior boys javelin with a 38.31-metre throw. Daniel Kreft landed some personal best results at the provincial high school track and field championships in Toronto at York University. The Russell High School student landed in sixth place in final of the midget boys 100-metre hurdles, June 8, at the Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships in Toronto. He finished third in his qualify heat with a time of 15.02 seconds, a new personal best time, which is half-a-second faster than his previous personal best for the event. Saturday saw Kreft shave a half-second off his personal best time in the 300-me- tre to finish third at 43.43 seconds in the preliminary heat of the 300-metre hurdles, which again earned him a place in the event finals later in the day. Kreft finished 13 th overall at the finish line for the end of his OFSAA appearance. Kreft’s OFSAA achievements cap his track- and-field season for Russell High School this year, after he took second place in the midget boys 100-metre hurdles at the two-day Eastern Regionals Track and Field Championships in Kingston at the end of May. He also nailed fourth in the midget boys 300-metre hurdles. “I’m always trying to improve,” Kreft said during a May 30 interview prior to the Eastern Regionals. “I want to break 43 seconds in

ON S’AMUSE À VÉLO À SAINT-ISIDORE

—photo Gregg Chamberlain
