The easiest way to avoid this catastrophic scenario is to test your backups regularly. Whether you use a cloud backup tool, backup and disaster recovery (BDR) server, or something similar, testing is important. When it comes to your precious data, you should heed that old adage about what happens when you assume. Testing your backups begins with doing a spot check. To perform one, run the same query on both your regular and backup server. Ideally, the results should match up. After a successful spot check, you should run a larger mock recovery. Sure, a few files worked, but will an entire application or directory? It might seem time-intensive and unnecessary right now, but if you ever need to rely on your backups, you’ll be thanking your lucky stars. You cannot simply test your backups once, either. It should be a regular practice, the same way that creating backups is. The difference is that you can probably automate the backup process, but you’ll always want to test manually. Now you just need to make sure your life jacket works.

Backing up your servers and files is one of the fundamental tenets of smart cybersecurity practice. The viability of your network and data are inextricably linked to the success and stability of your business. With so much riding on your server’s health, it’s foolish to forego backing up all of your data regularly. However, simply creating back- ups and thinking they’ll work when the time comes is not enough. It can be just as catastrophic as not having backups at all. Imagine the following scenario. One day, you come into work and everyone is in a panic. Your network has been subject to a ransomware attack and you can’t access anything on your server. “No problem,” you tell your staff. “That’s why we back everything up.” Then you go to access your backups, only to realize that the files aren’t working properly. All of a sudden, you’re in deep trouble.

SPOTLIGHT ON RYAN TRACY

Ryan Tracy joined AZCOMP as an account manager in April and it hasn’t taken him long to establish himself as an integral member of our team. He credits his fast start to the support he received from his coworkers. “Everyone at AZCOMP is amazing and the culture is beyond compare,” Ryan says. “There’s no other company I’d rather work for.”

In his role, Ryan provides advice to our clients about their services and systems. “It’s amazing to be able to help small practices run more efficiently,” he notes. “Anything I can do to help them allows them to devote more energy to what really matters: helping their patients.” Outside of work, Ryan, a former tennis coach, is enjoying playing the sport competitively again. “Now that tennis is no longer my job, I’m able to enjoy playing a lot more,” he reveals.

Be sure to check our website often at azcomp.com/events to learn about upcoming trainings and other events we host.

“I plan to be at AZCOMP for many years to come,” Ryan adds. “When you find the right fit, there’s no use looking elsewhere.”
