W ith the rise in popularity of cold-wa- ter swimming, there’s now renewed enthusiasm – and even evangelical fa- naticism – for the perfect counterpart to an icy outdoor dip: the sweltering sauna. Across the Nordic region and beyond, new pub- lic and private saunas are opening, while existing sau- nas are packed with visitors. The current sauna craze belies the fact that the ori- gins of the sauna are thought to date back thousands of years. Their first manifestation was as a pit sauna, literal- ly a pit dug into the ground, with stones for a floor cover- ing, and heated by campfire. Once the stones had warmed up, the pit was covered with wattle, thatch or peat, and then water was poured over the stones to create steam. Saunas were also prevalent in the ancient Islamic world and the indigenous cultures of Mexico and North America. According to one Harvard University study, the Native American tradition of the sweat lodge involved ceremonies and rituals, including “rites of preparation, prayer and purification”. In Japan, natural caves were used as sweat baths, which then evolved into bathhous- es at temples and beside monasteries. Every culture, through every age, has enjoyed its own form of sweat bathing. From the Ottoman ham- mam and Mayan temazcal, to the Japanese mushi-buro and kama-buro; from the banja spas of Serbia to the sau- nas of Finland, heat therapy has stood the test of time. Many people today treat the sauna as the latest ad- dition to their suite of self-care practices – along with yo- ga, massages and facials – the perfect antidote to busy 21 st -century lifestyles. Finally, and perhaps most impor- tantly, sauna sessions have a number of health benefits that include detoxification, increased metabolism, weight loss, increased blood circulation, pain reduction, antiag- ing, skin rejuvenation, improved cardiovascular function, improved immune function, improved sleep, stress man- agement and relaxation. Sauna use is not recommended for everybody, so be sure to check with your doctor first.
