Ritam grada Rhythm of the city

Even though there’s no distinct division between Belgrade’s theatres, you are nonetheless more likely to watch a drama at some theatres, a musical at others, and a good comedy elsewhere

F rom ancient satire and tragedy, marking the very beginnings of the- atre, which told its sto- ries under open skies, in amphitheatres, via travelling thea- tre troupes, to what we today con- sider theatre, not that much has changed. Theatre, in all its forms, has primarily endeavoured to tell the story of society and the world in which we live. And Serbian thea- tres are no exception in this sense, because some of them have been telling stories in the form of plays that it’s often been almost impos- sible to find a ticket for since the middle of the 19 th century. Like any other major world capital, Belgrade has many theatres, too many for it to be possible to present them all in one place, so here are just a few that you really should visit in Belgrade...

Jeste li već gledali neku predstavu? Have you already caught a show?

Neprolazna čarolija beogradskih pozornica / The enduring enchantment of Belgrade’s stages Iako je Srpsko narodno pozorište u Novom Sadu najstariji teatar na ovim prostorima, ipak su beogradska pozorišta iznedrila najsjajnija glumačka imena i predstave koje se ne zaboravljaju / Despite the Serbian National Theatre in Novi Sad being the oldest theatre in the land, Belgrade’s many theatres have still produced the most wonderful names in acting and unforgettable plays

YUGOSLAV DRAMA THEATRE The Yugoslav Drama Theatre (JDP) was founded in 1947 as a representative theatre with a supranational character. Many of the most prominent actors from the then country’s other hubs of culture - Zagreb, Novi Sad, Sarajevo, Split, Ljubljana and other cities – were called on to participate in the creation of this theatre. Famous actor and director Bojan Stupica was tasked with lead- ing the house as its artistic director. Stupica and theatre critic Eli Finci laid the foundations of the orientation of the JDP repertoire, as a theatre of a high lit- erary level. That would go on to remain at the foundation of the theatre to this day, though in addition to the literary element, the scenic element would also receive an equal place. Classics interpreted in a new way, both domestic and foreign, contemporary breakthrough plays and always prioritising local works form the pillars on which, in accordance with its own tradition, the tall building of spirit, style and taste known as the Yugoslav Drama Theatre still stands.
