time for a nap afterwards! And even better, go for a jog to keep your belt loose, because this dish really does have a million calories, but it's worth each one! Francesinha means “little French woman” or simply “Frenchie” in Portuguese. You may ask why the most iconic sandwich in the city is named after another country and Porto natives would have to say: Good question! This dish was created by Por- tuguese emigrants to France. They encountered the French snack that is the croque monsieur ham and cheese toastie and decided to take it to a whole new level. Et voilà: this is how Francesinha was born! A francesinha is usually made with bread (the thicker the better), wet-cured ham, Portuguese sau- sage, steak or roast beef, with everything covered by melted cheese and a special tomato and beer sauce. It is most commonly served with a fried egg on top and French fries that you can dip in the sauce. According to the locals, it’s difficult to select just one place as producing the best Frenchie in the city, so here we bring you three that have been chosen by food connoisseurs in Porto itself.
