Assessment of Children’s Development and Learning

Assessment of Children’s Development and Learning: A Guide to Assessment Methods in Early Childhood Education was written to help students understand and appreciate the unique principles, purposes, and processes of assessment in early childhood education. This textbook was written with the Filipino teacher in mind. Alongside a comprehensive discussion of literature from established theorists, early childhood leaders, professional organizations, and researchers, this textbook highlights how assessment happens in the local context through legal frameworks, case studies, and authentic examples from the authors’ professional experiences. This textbook begins with an overview of assessment in education, and explains the evolution of assessment practices with young children. It details the principles of assessment and specific principles for assessment of young children. Quantitative methods and qualitative methods are discussed extensively by showing a variety of assessment strategies and tools that teachers employ. It guides students by providing practical tips on how to collect, organize, document, analyze, interpret, as well as communicate assessment data for it to truly benefit children who are being assessed. The final chapter of this textbook discusses the challenges teachers experience around assessment planning and implementation, both from research and stories from the field. Some emerging practices in assessment relevant to the time of writing are also described in the last chapter. This textbook aims to develop early childhood teachers who not only understand and appreciate assessment on a conceptual level, but are also aware of the realities that early childhood practitioners experience in their quest of a well-designed assessment system that positively impacts the lives of young children.
