Introduction to Linguistics
Introduction to Linguistics provides an overview of linguistics as a discipline, its development, levels of structure, and its significance to English language teaching. It is intended to help scholars of language and future language teachers gain linguistic content knowledge and application across languages, using English competently to facilitate teaching and learning. It provides examples of Philippine English features and usage that teachers of English as a second language (ESL) in the Philippines can relate to and use in their classrooms. Student- readers, assumed to be preservice English teachers with no prior grounding in linguistics, will learn to recognize the general structural aspects of language (i.e., phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics) and major theories of linguistics in language acquisition, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and other related studies. While its main aim is to provide an introduction to the discipline of linguistics, it is also useful as a resource for a variety of fields such as education, language studies, psychology, cognitive science, and anthropology, to name a few. Furthermore, it offers practical and easy- to-understand applications of scientific language study to the day-to-day use of language, as well as valuable insights into the different varieties in cross-cultural and intercultural communication, the gaining legitimacy of what used to be considered nonstandard dialects, and the interconnections among linguistics, culture, communication, globalization, and worldview.
