A Course Module for Teaching Learners with Developmental Disabilities

This course module will provide aspiring teachers, parents, and caregivers of special needs children with in-depth knowledge and understanding of special education through organized lessons and activities in specific areas of teaching children with developmental disabilities. It offers both regular and special education teachers a guide on what is essential for these children, especially during a time when inclusive education is being actively promoted in our communities. Future educators will be able to give their utmost support and assistance to children with developmental disabilities and ensure the provision of quality, inclusive, and empowering education to which these children are entitled.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Sheena Jade G. Manuel

She is a specialist in charge of the Special Education Curriculum at the Bureau of Curriculum Development, Department of Education Main Office. She earned her Bachelor in Elementary Education with a specialization in Special Education and her Master of Arts in Education, major in Special Education, from the Philippine Normal University-Manila, graduating in 2007 and 2015, respectively. Currently, she is a candidate for the Ph.D. degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the same university. In recognition of her outstanding work as a special education teacher, Congressman Robbie Puno and former Mayor Jun Ynares of Antipolo City awarded her the title of Most Outstanding Teacher in 2015 and 2016. She has attended several special education-related conferences and benchmarking activities on special education program implementation in countries such as Australia, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Indonesia.

Tina Amor Villapando-Buhat

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Far Eastern University-Manila and is a candidate for a Ph.D. in Guidance and Counseling at Philippine University-Manila. She is a registered licensed guidance counselor, a registered psychometrician, and a licensed secondary teacher. Currently, she works at the Department of Education’s Bureau of Curriculum Development as a Senior Education Program Specialist. She is the focal person for the Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program and the Co-Lead Specialist for Special Education Programs. She has also attended and participated in benchmarking special education programs in Singapore and Indonesia and is involved in publishing relevant research in the field of Curriculum and Instruction.

Armida Roncales-Tecson

She is a special education teacher at Bagong Ilog Elementary School - Special Education Center in Pasig City. She has been handling multigrade levels of hearing-impaired pupils for the past 10 years. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Elementary Education, major in English, and with a specialization in Special Education from the Philippine Normal University-Manila. Currently, she is a graduate candidate for a Master of Arts in Education, major in Special Education, at the same university. Her career as an educator also includes roles as a curriculum writer in special education, a school paper adviser in English, a division and regional Paralympic coach, a demonstration teacher in the Division of Pasig, and a volunteer in the CAMP PAG-IBIG annual celebration for children with special needs. She has attended various national and regional seminars, conferences, and workshops in the country, all for her commitment and advocacy in special education.
