A Course Module for Understanding Gifted and Talented Learners
This module will help student teachers understand gifted students from different domains and areas. It will also guide them in exploring various curricular programs and instructional strategies used for teaching gifted students. This module provides activities that students can do individually or in groups, either in the classroom or at home. The concepts are presented in an easy-to-understand manner. The activities require students’ critical thinking and creativity—they will answer questions, conduct interviews, visit schools, examine programs, develop plans, and engage in critical reflection. This module can also be used for teacher training and workshops.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Greg Tabios Pawilen
Dr. Pawilen earned his Master of Arts in Education and Doctor of Philosophy in Education, major in Curriculum Studies, at the University of the Philippines- Diliman. He also obtained his Master of Education in Curriculum Development and completed a postdoctoral study on Gifted Education in Science at Ehime University in Japan. As a scholar, he has published numerous research papers in national and international peer-reviewed journals. He served as an associate professor of Curriculum Studies at the University of the Philippines for eight years and was a member of the CHED Technical Committee for Educational Leadership and Foundations for four years. He received various scholarship grants, including the Mombukagakusho Research Scholarship, JASSO Research Fellowship Grant, and JASSO Student Support Scholarship. He completed his Ph.D. with the “Academic Excellence Award” for achieving the highest general weighted average among all doctoral graduates. He also received the prestigious Pi Gamma Mu Award for Academic Excellence in Social Sciences and was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi International Honor Society. Currently, he is a professor at the College of Human Ecology and at the Graduate School of the University of the Philippines- Los Baños.
Albert Napoleon J. Roldan
He is a faculty member at the University of the Philippines College of Music, Diliman. He earned his Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, magna cum laude, from the same university and completed his master’s degree in piano performance at Temple University, Philadelphia, USA. He has also worked as a consultant for the Department of Education. As a musician, he has performed in concerts both locally and abroad and collaborated with three orchestras, including the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. Mr. Roldan is also a prizewinner in several music competitions. He has served as the official accompanist and an adjudicator for the 2017 National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA). He was featured in the Philippine Daily Inquirer (2002), on AM radio (DZUP), and on national television (PTV 4). As a Christian, he advocates for nation-building through music, holding benefit concerts for public schools, orphanages, churches, and retirement homes. He began this advocacy at the age of 13 when he made his first public solo performance at GCF Ortigas. He has also been involved in the preaching ministry, serving his local church since 2014.
