A Course Module for Content and Pedagogy for the Mother Tongue

A Course Module for Content and Pedagogy for the Mother Tongue is a self-instructional learning material that will help Bachelor of Elementary Education students comprehensively understand the Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education program being implemented in the Philippines. It is designed to equip future elementary school teachers with the pedagogical knowledge and skills necessary to teach the mother tongue as a learning area. This module is highly activity-based, with students expected to develop instructional plans for the mother tongue that include sound, interesting, and meaningful learning experiences, age-appropriate and culturally relevant materials, and robust assessments. At the end of the module, students are expected to apply their acquired knowledge and skills in teaching the mother tongue through demonstration teaching.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Jonna Marie A. Lim

She is an educator and a graduate of the Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English from the Philippine Normal University. She holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics and an MA in Teaching English Language from De La Salle University-Manila (DLSU). She is currently a part-time faculty member of DLSU’s graduate school and the high school principal of St. Scholastica’s College-Manila, where she began her career as a high school English teacher 14 years ago. Her research interests include language teaching and assessment, sociolinguistics, language acquisition, and psycholinguistics. She recently published a course module on purposive communication for Rex Book Store, Inc.

Elen Joy P. Alata

She is the coordinator for English in the high school unit of St. Scholastica’s College-Manila. She is also a Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC) trainer for teachers, a curriculum validator for the Department of Education’s Curriculum for the Gifted, and a textbook writer. She earned her Master in Education major in Curriculum Studies and a Bachelor in Secondary Education (Communication Arts-English) from the University of the Philippines-Diliman. Her research interests include curriculum design, curriculum evaluation, and learner-centered pedagogy. She co-authored A Course Module for Purposive Communication, Building and Enhancing New Literacies Across the Curriculum, A Course Module for Content and Pedagogy for the Mother Tongue, and the STEAM Series (Language) for Kindergarten.

Raphael M. Ferrer

He is an experienced assistant professor, resource speaker, trainer, and researcher. He has taught in the Department of Human and Family Development Studies, College of Human Ecology, University of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB). He is a registered social worker skilled in community organizing, community psychology, and conducting social psychological research. He holds a Master of Arts in Applied Social Psychology from Ateneo de Manila University and a Bachelor of Science in Social Work from UP-Diliman.
