A Course Module for Teaching Science in Primary Grades (Biology and Chemistry)

A Course Module for Teaching Science in Primary Grades (Biology and Chemistry) includes the most effective, hands-on, learner-centered pedagogy for teaching science in the primary grades. It also provides an understanding of basic science concepts and inquiry-based learning in chemistry and biology, as well as guidance on assessment in science. The core chemistry topics in this module include the properties and structure of matter and the changes that matter undergoes. The biology topics covered here are the parts and functions of animals and plants, heredity: inheritance and variation, biodiversity, evolution, and ecosystems. Additional learning resources for this module include Internet resources and slide presentations related to the lessons. Each lesson presents the topics using the TEACH method—T for Think, presenting facts; E for Experience, exposing the reader to exciting hands-on activities; A for Assess, checking the reader’s understanding; C for Challenge, providing opportunities for in- depth understanding of concepts; and H for Harnessing the reader’s creativity in producing instructional materials.
