Ethics: Foundations of Moral Valuation is a book for a college course on ethics. The book complies with the Commission on Higher Education Memorandum Order No. 20, Series of 2013. It covers the different factors and contexts affecting one’s moral background and explores various frameworks for moral valuation. It analyzes four major ethical theories, namely, utilitarianism, natural law, deontology, and virtue ethics. Additionally, the book discusses theories by key philosophers such as Bentham, Mill, Aquinas, Kant, and Aristotle. Lastly, it offers practical guidelines for ethical decision-making contextualized within the contemporary Filipino experience.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Oscar G. Bulaong Jr., Ph.D.
He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Management and his master’s degree in Philosophy from Ateneo de Manila University. He earned his PhD in Philosophy from the Institut für Philosophie of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He is the executive director of the Gov. Jose B. Fernandez Jr. Ethics Center at the Graduate School of Business of Ateneo de Manila, where he teaches leadership and business ethics.
Mark Joseph T. Calano, Ph.D.
He obtained his PhD in Philosophy from Ateneo de Manila University and his PhD in Applied Linguistics from Saint Louis University. He is an associate professor in the Department of Philosophy at Ateneo de Manila University, where he teaches philosophy of religion, ethics, and the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas.
Albert M. Lagliva, Ph.D.
He obtained his PhD in Philosophy from Ateneo de Manila University. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy at Ateneo de Manila University. He teaches Philosophy of the Human Person, Philosophy of Religion, Philosophy of Nature, Ethics, and Eastern Philosophy. His research interests include Martha Nussbaum and ancient philosophies.
Michael Ner E. Mariano, Ph.D.
He has Ph.D. in Philosophy at Ateneo de Manila University. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy at the same institution, teaching courses in the Philosophy of the Human Person, Philosophy of Religion, Ethics, Philoophy of Science, Science and Religion, and Cosmology.
Jesus Deogracias Z. Principe, Ph.D.
He obtained his PhD in Philosophy from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Leuven, Belgium. He teaches in various seminaries. His teaching and research focus on ethics, the philosophy of religion, ancient Greek philosophy, Plato studies, Asian philosophies, and philosophy and literature.
