This textbook is written to help students in acquiring knowledge, fostering critical thinking and creativity, utilizing cognitive skills to better understand contemporary events, and developing positive attitudes. It is composed of four chapters. The first chapter focuses on the history of science and technology— discussing the scientific revolution and history of science and technology, physics, and chemistry. The second chapter presents the philosophy of science and technology—exposing the scientific method, science, technology, and religion, and the epistemology and ethics in science and technology. The third chapter discusses science and technology in nation-building—emphasizing on science programs, science education, and science literacy in the country. Finally, the fourth chapter includes discussions on issues and challenges in science and technology. Each lesson is divided into three important parts: READ, REFLECT, and RESPOND. The READ section includes a discussion of key concepts, as well as related research as supplement for a better understanding of the material. The REFLECT section provides guide questions that improve students’ critical thinking skills that can be applied in real life. The RESPOND section contains authentic project-based assessments that help students improve their critical thinking, collaborative skills, and innovative skills. Science, Technology, and Society

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Eden Joy Pastor Alata, MS in Biology

Eden Joy Pastor Alata has been teaching full time at the Biological Sciences Department of Centro Escolar University. She is a graduate of Master of Science in Biology at De La Salle University-Manila under the DOST PCIEERD Scholarship and Bachelor of Science in Biology (magna cum laude) at University of the East Manila. She currently holds the assistant to the dean post of the School of Science and Technology, CEU-Manila. She is a co-author of GEC textbooks and modules for Understanding the Self and Science, Technology, and Society as well as education titles especially A Course Module for Teaching Strategies for Elementary Science (Physical and Earth Science) and A Course Module for Science in Early Childhood Education.

Antonnette B. Pawilen

Antonnette B. Pawilen graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of the Philippines-Los Baños. She was awarded the Monbukagakusho Scholarship and is currently a research student at the Faculty of Education at Ehime University. She co-authored A Course Module for Science in Early Childhood Education. As a writer and researcher, she delves into various topics in science, technology, and society. Her academic interests include science, ethics, philosophy of religion, and indigenous knowledge.

Ann Joan Hope Vallespin-Caparas, MS in Chemistry Education

Ann Joan Hope Vallespin-Caparas brings extensive experience in teaching high school science, mathematics, and science, technology, and society (STS) at St. Scholastica’s College - Manila, where she currently serves as the school registrar. She holds a Master of Science in Chemistry Education from the Ateneo de Manila University and a Diploma in Mathematics Teaching from the University of the Philippines Open University. She is also currently pursuing her Doctor of Philosophy in Education, specializing in educational management at The Philippine Women’s University.

Ariel Juguilon Ricablangca

Ariel Juguilon Ricablangca is a research assistant at Mindanao State University-Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU-TCTO) in Sanga- Sanga, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi. A magna cum laude graduate and class salutatorian of the Class of 2023, he holds a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries from the same university. He is a registered fisheries professional (RFP) and a certified open water scuba diver of National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI Worldwide). He also served as the editor-in-chief of the MSU-TCTO official student publication. Additionally, he was a Department of Science and Technology Junior Level Science Scholarship (DOST-JLSS) scholar and a university academic scholar during his undergraduate studies. He graduated with honors in both junior and senior high school at Laureano Salusod National High School in Kagawasan, Dimataling, Zamboanga del Sur and was class salutatorian at Balanagan Elementary School in Dimataling, Zamboanga del Sur. He is dedicated to advancing research and promoting sustainable practices in the field of marine biodiversity, fisheries, oceanography, and ecology.
