A Course Module for Art Appreciation

There are numerous ways to appreciate the diverse fields of art, and our experiences with them can vary widely. Art, in all its forms and expressions, offers many valuable benefits: it fosters creative problem-solving, enhances critical thinking, deepens our understanding of humanity, and nurtures our intrinsic human sensibilities, making us more holistic members of society. What will you expect from this module? Divided into two major parts, the first two chapters will focus on visual arts, while the last two are about music appreciation. In Chapter 1, “That’s Art, So What? What Is Art for, Functions, Relevance, and Significance,” you will learn to connect art with yourself first, in whatever state you may be. The goal of the first chapter is to make art relevant to you by starting with our humanity. What is art to me? Who is an artist? How do I learn art? These are the questions we will try to answer. Chapter 2, “I’m a Filipino, But I Don’t Know Manansala! Rediscovering Philippine Art,” is devoted to the rediscovery and reconnection of our present lives with what has transpired in the Philippine art. You will be introduced to some important markers of our artistic achievements and how they have helped form the foundations of our national identity. Hopefully, you will also gain and develop your love for our beautiful country. In Chapter 3, “Prelude: The Art of Listening,” you will learn the basic elements of music and the functions, purposes, and common areas of intersection between music and other arts. Technological advances of the Fourth and Fifth Industrial Revolutions, or Industry 4.0 and 5.0, and their implications for music production are taken into perspective. Chapter 4, “Expositions: A Journey through Musical Time,” is a survey of the historical eras of music and their characteristic styles. A section on Philippine music is also included. Extensive exposure via listening samples is used. Concepts learned from Chapter 3 will be employed to analyze and critique various musical forms and styles from each period. In a time when the arts are not held in such high esteem as the sciences, we, the authors, hope to breathe fresh life into these fields. This module is our labor of love for the Filipino youth. To God be the glory!
