THE WORLD’S MOST COMPLICATED MARRIAGE PROPOSAL WHY I CROSSED THE COUNTRY TO GET 3 FATHERS’ BLESSINGS JUNE 2021 OHMINO.COM

shrewd businessman and a tough negotiator with a rough, rascally reputation. But when I asked for his blessing — note that I didn’t ask for his permission; it’s the Irishman in me — he was a total sweetheart. “You’re lucky to have her, and we’re lucky to have you!” he said. He even went in for a hug. By the time I left Flagstaff for Phoenix, I really felt like part of the family. Then, I did a crazy thing: Instead of flying home from Phoenix, I got on a plane to New Mexico. There, Darlene’s biological father, Eddie, and his wife took me out to dinner. Eddie is a big softie, so I expected this half of the blessing to be easy. But like Ernie, he surprised me! When I pulled out the ring he said, “Well, what if I don’t give you my blessing?” I was surprised, but I managed to shoot back, “Eddie, I asked for your blessing, not your permission. But if you don’t give it, we can walk outside and talk until you do!” Thankfully, he caved with a chuckle. “I’m not going there with you, Michael!” he said. “I’m just testing you. I love you, and of course you have my blessing!” Whew! The next morning, I flew back to L.A. and drove out to the same campground where my parents had stayed on Mother's Day, too — I told you about that last month. My dad was outside barbecuing when I arrived, and I pulled out the ring. He was as pleased as punch! My dad’s blessing meant just as much to me as the blessings from Darlene’s dads. He’s a brilliant guy, fiscally conservative and thrifty. He retired at 57 because he was so smart with his money, and he’s always the life of any party. When I take him to the grocery store, I can’t turn around without him making a friend in the produce aisle. He’s been a great dad my whole life. Now that he’s vaccinated, I can’t wait to wish him Happy Father’s Day in person. I hope that you can do the same for your dad.

I knew that I was going to marry my wife, Darlene, within six months of meeting her. After a year of dating I was ready to buy a ring. I scrimped and saved, and to throw her off the scent, I told her that I was saving up for a new car (this was true, but the ring was priority No. 1). Then, it was time for the most daunting part of this complicated proposal: Asking for the blessings of Darlene’s two dads and my dad to boot. Darlene was a child of divorce, so she grew up with a biological father and a stepfather who basically raised her. She’s very close to both of them. Once, when I was trying to figure out their relationship, I asked her, “If I said, ‘Your dad is coming around the corner!’ who would you picture in your head?’” and she said, “Honestly, both of them. I think of them both as my dad.” From that moment on, I knew I was in for a double-header at blessing time. All of this was complicated by the fact that Darlene’s stepdad, Ernie, lived in Arizona; her biological dad, Eddie, lived in New Mexico; and I lived in California. Luckily, my dad lived in California, too. At least he made my job easy! Since I’m a perfectionist, I wanted to see all of the dads in person, so I started planning right away. I decided that the ideal time to see the dads would be Father’s Day weekend, which is why I felt inspired to tell you this story now! That Father’s Day weekend was epic. First, I flew from Los Angeles to Phoenix, then I took a plane to Flagstaff. Ernie and his wife picked me up and took me out to dinner. I expected some ribbing from Ernie. He’s a successful,

Stay fit my friend!

A SURPRISING WAY TO FIGHT ALZHEIMER'S PHYSICAL THERAPY:

Alzheimer's disease is an ailment that continues to baffle us, even as we learn more about it than ever before. Doctors and scientists have made huge strides in understanding and fighting Alzheimer’s, especially in the past three decades. But for everything learned, more questions must be asked. Sometimes, things just work, and we aren’t sure why. For a long time, exercise and physical therapy were part of that. PT had a role in slowing Alzheimer’s, but doctors didn’t fully understand what that was. Today, we have a much clearer picture, and that provides hope for future understanding. There are two things at the root of PT’s connection to good Alzheimer’s treatment. The first is very basic: Alzheimer’s responds to physical activity. Just as certain mental exercises can help stave off or slow down the advent of the disease, physical activity has been shown in studies published by Harvard and in trade journals to have a positive effect on some Alzheimer’s outcomes. Obviously, it isn’t a frontline treatment, but staying active helps your brain continue to “work out” the parts that are connected to movement and body functions, which are negatively impacted by the mid and late stages of the disease.

we expect PT to progress and then slow down, even cease after a while. That’s because the injury has healed. But with Alzheimer’s, the goal of PT is to keep mobility high for as long as possible . It’s not a winning battle, but the longer we can stay active and mobile, the better our quality of life will be. Once the illness progresses to the mobility and physical function regions of the brain, physical therapy becomes all the more important. Because many late-stage Alzheimer’s patients can expect to be bedridden, increasing mobility as much as possible for as long as possible can help mitigate risks such as bed sores and other secondary ailments. According to a recent study published in the American Journal of Medicine, therapy and activity can decrease the disease progressing through the physical activity centers of the brain by as much as 50%. There’s no denying that Alzheimer’s is a frightening condition, and watching loved ones go through it is hard. But we aren’t powerless in this situation. We need to put together a treatment plan, and a holistic plan will include physical activity, and later physical therapy, to mitigate those aspects of the disease. It may not be a cure, but it is a smart and effective treatment based on hard science. Right now, that has to be enough.

To that end, physical therapy itself has a big part to play. The key goal is to retain mobility. If a patient has a broken leg,

OH!MINO GIVES AN ENDURANCE CYCLIST A BOOST MEET GERARD, THE 59-YEAR-OLD WHO BIKED 88.3 MILES

U.S. Air Force veteran Gerard Papsch picked up endurance mountain biking during his military service in the mid- 1990s. Now, at 59, he is a top-ranked endurance road cyclist with the Project Hero Reno HUB and Procrastinating Pedalers of Reno-Tahoe in Nevada. But a few years ago, Gerard felt himself slipping. The amino acid complexes he used no longer cut it. “As I started riding greater distances and increasing in age, I noticed a serious decline in my overall abilities,” he says. “So, I thought it was time to restructure my supplements and nutrition for cycling.” Gerard came across Oh!mino after finding the NASA study that inspired our formula. Intrigued, he ordered a starter pack. “I couldn't help but notice from the first day I took it how invigorating it felt overall and how much it increased my ability, endurance-wise and performance- wise, almost immediately,” he says. Gerard added Oh!mino to his workout routine and now uses our capsules,

powder, and caffeine-free powder products at least twice a day, including on his bike! With the support of Oh!mino, he has taken his cycling to new heights. His first goal was to complete a Grand Fondo — a 62-mile ride. “I accomplished my first one with the help of Oh!mino!” he says, noting that he keeps extra powder with him to add to his water at checkpoints. It makes cycling easier and more comfortable, and decreases his stiffness and pain the next day.

Last year, Gerard crushed another milestone. On the first day of the One Awesome Tour Bike Ride Across Nevada (OATBRAN), he finished an 88.3-mile ride, his longest in four years! He has also caught back up with the lead riders in his local groups. “I couldn’t be more pleased [with Oh!mino], period,” Gerard says. “In all honesty, after all of the sweat and effort and money I've put into all of the sports over all the years — either being forced to have to try to stay in shape because of being a military member or choosing to do so as part of my aging process — I am SO glad that I found this product. I couldn't be more thankful.” We’re pumped about Gerard’s progress and can’t wait to see him slay the full five- day, 420-mile OATBRAN!
