the spring last quite a bit longer by not being maximally crushed for months at a time. I know I should swap out mags every other week; but I live in the real world, and it happens about twice a year. I also have two standard-ca- pacity (17-round) back up mags loaded with 15 rounds. The other thing with this set up, I live in Tennessee, and it’s illegal to have a chambered rifle in your vehicle. By running an AR pistol with a Tailhook brace, I avoid running afoul of that law and have a close approximation of a 9mm SBR. The setup is actually better than an SBR as it can be run one handed without a huge loss in accuracy. With this 9mm, I am running an 8” barrel and han- dloaded 147-grain JHPs. My desire was to maximize velocity, as the BC of 9mm is pretty bad and reaching out to 100+ yards involves significant drop. In a 4.5-inch pis - tol my load would get real about to 1100 fps (with AA7). With the longer barrel, I’m much closer to 1200 fps.
With the 1200 fps (and a BC of .212) with a 100-yard zero, in the first 100 yards the rise is no more than 3” and the drop is just over 10” at 150 yards. Adding in the extra stability of the platform and a red-dot type optic, makes hitting out to 150 yards much easier than with any pistol. On the passenger side resides a 20” barreled AR with a 1x10 mil-dot optic. The projectile of choice is the 77-grain Berger OTM. I use AA 2520 and the 20” barrel helps me get close to 2800 fps. At 830#/ft of energy, this provides a bit more hitting power than the standard 55-grain option (750 #/ft) at 250 yards. With a 200-yard zero, it is never more than 2” high on the near side and is only 3.5” low at 250 yards. Although the extra 80 #/ft isn’t a huge amount, it is helpful, and the Berger OTM bullet is designed to shatter in game. This provides a strong degree of protection from over penetration should self-defense be a need.
