lighter bullets, like 27-grain lead-free hollow points did not produce a complete penetration of a full upright 12oz beverage can: not good for stopping human foes. RR Weapon Systems’ all-copper 37-grain 2680fps expanding load performed well: its three-petal bullets expanded to 2/3” and penetrated 12 inches in gel. Terminal performance on unarmored foes is a bit lower than with 9mm JHP, but faster practical rate of fire and better practical accuracy make this caliber an excellent contender for defensive use, especially for repelling home invasions or dealing with pogroms, events for which bad guys may come equipped with soft body armor. In the home-defense context, reduced penetra- tion of common house materials is another plus. Maintenance on it is super simple: press the release latch on the buttstock to relieve the pressure on the recoil
spring, push out the retaining pin, then pull the stock re- lease mechanism off, followed by the stock itself. Nothing is under pressure, no concern about parts being projected by compressed springs. Pull the bolt half-way back, pull the charging handle from the stock cutout, then shake the bolt and the bolt carrier out of the back. The carbine folding the middle gives easy access to the breech without any fieldstripping at all. In 5.7x28, the Sub2000 is just fun to shoot. Everyone enjoys it at the range. Pretty much the only ergonomic limitation is the long length of pull, requiring a bladed stance for smaller-statured marksmen. Lower recoil and reduced bullet deflection by wind and distance make it easy to shoot well, while a smaller muzzle signature than 5.56 makes it more practical for unsuppressed emergency use. D P
