Chapter Eight Buna
Wiktor appeared at my barracks the night before I was to be transferred. He said, “Tomorrow you will be leaving.” I was elated. He continued, “One of the reasons you had to wait so long is that I did not want you to go to one of the small work camps, like the coal mines nearby. I think your chances of surviving there would be slim. Instead, I was waiting for you to go to Buna, but I could not do that until they ordered more labor and, in your case, teenagers. They don’t accept many teenag- ers.” I listened. I knew that Wiktor was also a prisoner, like me, so there was only so much he could do. He had already saved me when I was in the direst of needs, and now, hearing I will be leaving tomorrow, it felt like he was again giving me a great gift: my life. Before he left, the last thing he said to me was, “Leon, you must not return here. Once you leave, you can never come back. If you are sent back for any
