Malcolm Rosenberg

Malcolm was the first person to begin doing interviews with Leon for this book. With little prompting over a period of six months he frequently visited to capture the thread of what happened. I can’t tell you how difficult a task this is because our memories order things in unknown ways with snippets of thoughts coming out of order. I asked him to just write whatever he heard, not to try to make sense of it. After his visits, he would send me his notes, and I would stitch them together into a coherent story. Once I cleaned them up, I handed them back to Malcolm so he would continue the quest and double check my work. The process is exhausting both physically and emotionally for ev- eryone involved. Reliving Leon’s story is not easy, no one could remain unmoved by realizing what he went through. When someone asks me what can I do for the survivors I tell them one of the best things to do is just listen. I raise my cup and toast Malcolm for a job well done!
