The Horse Adjutant

The Horse Adjutant

This period started to unravel around 1935 when Poland began to pass laws that discriminated against Jews. The passing of these laws foretold a great tragedy. Each law was a small step on a slippery slope. It all started with a series of laws, one worse than the next, until the rights of the Jews were negligible. Even though the Jews were directly in the crosshairs of these laws other minorities suffered as well. To the south of my home lived a people we called Yuvanim. These were people who, according to local lore, were chased out of Russia by Ivan-the-Ter- rible in 1560. And even though to my family we knew them as Yuvanim, in actuality they represented many sects. By the time it was over no one was left untouched.
