calf. The way back was difficult because the calf was so ornery. I had to fight the beast the whole journey home. Other peasants helped us as well. I am glad my father treated them well in the good times. My daily life was reduced to finding a little food for my family to eat each night. We did whatever we had to do to survive including trading our clothing for food. We were not alone. All of the Jews were becoming paupers in their own homes by this time. Everything we did to survive was illegal. But given the choice between punishment or starvation, it wasn’t much of a choice.
