The Horse Adjutant

The Horse Adjutant quickly covered my tracks. The motorcycles zoomed by, and I found myself safe in the white-covered woods. I made my way through the thicket to a village where I knew I had friends. I went directly to the home of the Mol family who I knew were friends of my father. It was very late at night. I knocked on the door. I heard people stirring from the inside. A woman answered the door holding a kerosene lamp. It was dark, so it took her a moment to recognize me. I said, “Please help me. The Gestapo is chasing me.”

Without words, she directed her two boys to take my horse and sled. They moved the rig to the side, covered it with straw, and unhooked the horse to put him in the barn. Then they took me into their house where it was, warm and safe. Mrs. Mol handed me a little soup. As I relaxed, I remember seeing some small children. They reminded me of my siblings and the urgency of my mission. I stayed there for a little while until I thought it was safe. Then before dawn, I started again under the cover of darkness and bitter cold. I had to get back before daybreak. Thoughts were racing in my head. I looked for the enemy lurking behind every tree. But my family depended upon me, so I put these thoughts out of my head, gathered my senses, and made my way home. When I arrived, I was cold and tired but alert as if I was still being chased. It took a while for me to calm down. My father knew that something must have happened, but said nothing. He looked cold and tired. It was early in the morning. Looking carefully, I noticed our conditions were taking a toll on him, too. My whole family and our guests looked blue with cold. We put a
