options (locally Vegetable Garden, Yuan Fu, and numerous others), some exclusively so. With its growing popularity, the seafood industry is taking notice and investing in it. Millions of dollars have been invested in developing products that replicate the flavors and textures of fish, shrimp, and other aquatic animals, made instead from seaweed, soy, pea protein or other ingredients. Even governments are beginning to fund the development of vegan seafood products. There are also countless vegan seafood recipes, many using whole food ingredients, that individuals can make for themselves. (See the “Seafood” section of Fish Feel.org for recipes and companies that offer vegan seafood products.) There are marvelous vegan versions of virtually every type of food imaginable. Many of the foods that people commonly consume are vegan though most people don’t realize they are (products that do not contain animal-derived ingredients). It’s easier than ever to opt for a healthful diet that doesn’t cause needless animal suffering or environmental harm, and it’s a delicious way to eat: the vegan way! Mary Finelli is founder and president of Fish Feel, and she chairs the Save the Rays Coalition. Mary is a long-time animal rights activist with a B.S. in Animal Science. She has worked with various animal protection organizations, primarily focusing on farmed animals. Mary was the Producer of Farmed Animal Watch, a weekly online news digest sponsored by numerous animal protection organizations. She has contributed a chapter to Vegan Voices , and co-wrote a chapter of In Defense of Animals: The Second Wave . Fish Feel is the first organization devoted to promoting the recognition of fishes as sentient beings deserving of respect and compassion. It primarily serves to help educate the public as to why these animals are deserving of our admiration and appreciation, the immense problems caused by the exploitation of them, and how we can help them. https://www.FishFeel.org Cam MacQueen is the creator and manager of «Cultivating Compassion.» She has been an ethical vegan for nearly 37 years and is happy to be a board member of Fish Feel.

Act. There are no federal anti-cruelty laws covering them, and they are exempt from many state anti-cruelty laws. Fishing methods are egregiously inhumane. Fishes can suffer for hours or even days, and many are cut up while still fully conscious. Farmed fishes are kept in crowded pens, unable to escape weather extremes or attacks by jellyfish swarms or other predators. Mortality is high due to stress and unsanitary conditions, and the captive fishes can spread disease and lice to wild fishes. Antibiotics and other chemicals used to try to keep the fishes alive long enough to reach slaughter weight can pollute surrounding waters, as do decomposing fishes and fish wastes. Genetically engineered fishes are already being sold for human consumption in Canada, without being labeled as such, and they are Despite the hype about seafood being a health food, it is anything but. Consumption of aquatic animals is a health hazard due to the mercury, dioxins, PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), PFAS (polyfluoroalkyl substances, aka “forever chemicals”), parasites, micro-plastic, cholesterol, saturated fat, etc., they contain. Similarly, fish oil can be contaminated, and it can easily become rancid, which can result in free radicals that are potentially carcinogenic. All of the nutrients derived from animals can be obtained more healthfully, humanely, and environmentally responsibly from plant sources. For example, omega fatty acids can be obtained from walnuts, flaxseed oil, flaxseeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, or, for a concentrated dose, algae supplements (algae being how fishes obtain their omegas). Delicious vegan seafood products can now be found in mainstream supermarkets; many fine dining restaurants offer vegan seafood posed for sale in the U.S. Healthy Alternatives
