Both children and adults can be diagnosed with AutismSpectral Disorder and while every individual will experience unique conditions there are two common characteristics. The first characteristic is impaired social interaction: communication and social situations can be challenging. Communicative gestures aremissed or misinterpreted, sarcasmmay not be recognised, statements can be taken as literal. Children with Autismmay take longer to learn language andmight require picture boards and tools to aid communication and help them to express feelings.
The second characteristic is where individuals express repetitive or ritualistic behaviour. Behaviour can range fromsmall gestures to compulsive rituals, and the slightest change froma daily routine can cause distress and upset. Themajority of us can automatically filter out background noise, adjust our eyes in order to adapt to bright light and ignore a flickering fluorescent lamp, but those experiencing hypersensitivity struggle to process sensory information. This can result in anything fromaminor annoyance to a sensory white out and extreme pain or discomfort.
