06. COLOUR & APPLICATION
Using just onemainwall colour throughout a large building can be bland andmonotonous. Depending on the size of the project the number of colours in a palette may vary.
—Colour pops for smaller areas to add interest and stimulation —Mid-toned colours can be used on broad wall areas and / or for feature areas —Colours for trimareas if these are to be different from the wall areas There are inspirational examples on the following pages showing how to really use colour as a tool in order to; create a focal point, correct an awkward space, blur the boundaries or emphasisemovement and direction.
It is ideal to include the following:
—Materials and finishes form the starting point of the palette as these are key design elements, many of which will remain in situ and last longer than a paint colour —Amixture of base, mid and accent colours —A combination of low and high intensity colours —A few base colours to be used for broad wall areas
When considering the redecoration of a large building it can be useful to compile a palette of colours andmaterial finishes. Not only is a restricted palette beneficial for storage and maintenance but it also allows a fluent scheme to flow through the building.
