07. TRENDS& INFLUENCES Our trends result frommonths of research at exhibitions, conferences, trade shows, news and from everyday life. Whether we want to believe it or not, we are all influenced by what’s trending at any moment in time.
“When choosing trends it is important to look at the bigger picture. Everything isconnected.” Justyna Korczynska, Crown Design Studio
Certain things happen which have the power to influence howwe think, act, feel and behave. Some trends are a ‘flash in the pan’ – think of the popular colour of the year or the trend for a certain haircut. But, contrary to popular opinion, some trends are not temporary; they do not suddenly change frommonth to month and season to season. These trends evolve over many years flowing into new looks, which stem from the same trail of thought. These trends becomemovements. In this section key drivers are highlighted to show the thought and inspiration behind each trend. Some themes aremore prevalent and recur year after year.
Of course, we can’t neglect the fast- evolving world of technology, but what will thismean for society? Long gone are the days when you were greeted at the supermarket checkout by a human – we’re now entering the world where Amazon is just months away from the launch of its all electric Prime Air drone in a bid to get orders to buyers faster than a one-day delivery service. For many years there’s been talk of 3D printing and it’s still to become mainstream, but when it does it will surely reduce the amount of waste that goes to straight to landfill. Probably themost extreme example of 3D printing is the Gaia House in Italy where the house was printed on site using a natural mudmixture of soil taken from the same site.
What does thismean for our trends? We’ll always have the big background story which showcases themovement, but we’ll put our own stamp on the styling and photography to keep it fresh andmove things forward. All this talk of technology leaves us longing for tactile fabrics and finishes. As plastic is rapidly losing favour, we’ll see a rise of glass, ceramics, stone and jute. When we talk about health and well-being, we’re not just talking a shade of green and some indoor plants; wemight start talking about philosophies.
For now, you’ll just have towait and see…
For technical reasons the colours shown will not exactly match the paint colour and do not represent a particular texture or finish.
