Artificial Light When there is insufficient daylight, we can use artificial light to supplement the light in our buildings. Before the discovery of electricity, daily routines were linked to the seasons; shorter routines in winter and longer in summer. There is an increased risk of falls in poor lighting conditions and light has a huge impact on our ability to complete a task and on our general well-being.
Limitations and problems due to artificial lighting include:
—Colour rendering. Colours are not perceived as they should be — Lighting is insufficient or too bright — Flicker can cause fatigue and evenmigraine — Lack of control within a shared use space — Light casting dramatic shadows, dark spots and bright spots — Light can contrast greatly from one area to the next —Artificial light can take a long time to reach ideal output levels when first switched on
