LIGHTING (CONT) .

1

B. Functional (cont)

Different forms of functional lighting to suit all requirements.

1. General or ambient lighting This provides a uniform spread of light over a large area. This is usually achieved through a variety of ceiling light fittings. Examples are in open plan offices, corridors and sports halls. There are guidelines for recommended lighting levels in different spaces - usually measured in Lux at floor level unless stated.

2. Task lighting Task lighting sheds light on a task at hand; food preparation, laboratory work or reading for which a brighter light is required for a smaller point of focus. If there is enough general light a task light is not required.

As a word of warning, Halogen bulbs can get very hot so a compact fluorescent bulb or LED bulb should be considered as these are cooler to the touch. 3. Accent lighting Accent light is often used to highlight features such as a paintings in a gallery or a museumdisplay.

The importance of accent lighting is to: —Avoid glare into the eyes of onlookers —Create an even spread of light over the object —Maintain a visually stimulating environment

Forms of task lighting to consider: —Wardrobe lighting —Moveable lamps that can support tasks such as reading, writing etc —Under-cupboard lighting to wall units in kitchens to highlight the worktop (a pelmet may need to be used on the base of the wall unit to shield the user from glare) — Lighting over sinks and hobs in kitchens — Lighting over sinks/either side of themirror in bathrooms
