Light can achieve a sense of wellness and harmony and complement a well balanced colour scheme.
An upscale restaurant on the other hand, uses warm low level lighting to encourage customers to linger and spendmoremoney on coffee, dessert and an extra glass of wine. A small amount of light can offer security and protection; a night light can banish nightmare inducing monsters or aid a safe passage to the bathroom in the dark. A space that is badly lit, on the other hand, canmake us feel wary and unsafe, such as a dark corridor or a gloomy car park. BBCHorizon aired a special programme called Total Isolation in January 2008. Six participants agreed to be kept inside a nuclear bunker without any access to light for 48 hours.
Two of the participants were fine, three experienced hallucinations and all of themstruggled tomaintain a sense of time. Humans need light to function.
