“In terms of colour, while there are no set rules, a restful low intensity hue or something not highly stimulating is beneficial to encourage sleep.”

Bedroom - Sleeping In a healthy sleep routine we spend close to a third of our lives asleep. A bedroom should support a healthy sleeping pattern. Blackout curtains and blinds reduce light pollution, human centric lighting gently prepares us for waking and sleeping and textures and fabrics can provide acoustic control. Sleep is highly important for everyday functioning; a lack of sleep can lead tomany negatives symptoms. In terms of colour, while there are no set rules, a restful low intensity colour or something not highly stimulating is beneficial. For simplicity - clean lines and minimal patterns on the walls can establish the feeling of a restful environment a space of calm and restoration.

The home provides shelter from the elements, it is a retreat from the outside world and offers a place to house our memories, personal belongings and privatemoments. Our homes reflect our lifestyles - in some cases they are an extension of ourselves, highly organised running like clockwork or chaotic and a little dishevelled around the edges. Beautifully presented or comfortable and practical, the home is a place to express personality and individuality. Multi-generational living is becoming increasingly popular as housing prices increase; while urban living apartments now include facilities to assist socialising and combat the modern living epidemic of loneliness; such as gyms, coffee shops and small cinemas. Amove froma family home into sheltered, assisted living or a care home will mean a new start in unfamiliar surroundings. Treasured

belongings and personal objects can be reassuring and offer a necessary sentimental connection to a former home. A stamp of identity is an integral part of home design and can be expressed through a choice of furniture, blankets, photographs, cushions or even the paint colour on the walls. These relatively small elements can transform a neutral space into a home. A hotel on the other hand has to appeal to a wider audience than that of an individual or a family. Usually decor tends to steer away from strong design statements or anything that will cause a strong reaction. Neutrality or subtlety can create a balanced scheme, the key is to avoid a boring middle of the road approach and express creative flair without being offensive. A hotel room is multifunctional, it acts as a mini home and becomes a place to eat, sleep and dine.
