05.C DEMENTIA
Strategic design can enhance the environment and enable a person who has dementia to remain independent for longer.
Dementia is the umbrella term used to describe the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by a number of conditions.
The Colour Service is often asked to provide colour schemes for Dementia care facilities. Understanding the implications of Dementia can help guide the design for a Dementia care setting, in particular how best to use colour, texture andmaterial to create a practical and welcoming environment. Medical research looks at the causes of Dementia and consequential treatments, whilst design research deals with the effects.
Strategic design can enhance the environment and enable a person who has dementia to remain independent for longer.
There are approximately 850, 000 people in the UK
(Alzheimer’s Society 2020) who suffer fromDementia and this number is expected to increase to 1 million by 2025. Currently there is no cure for Dementia but there is treatment to slow the process down, and an early diagnosis can helpmanage symptoms. Dementia causes nerve cells to die and these cannot be replaced. The part of the brain where the nerve cells die influences the type of Dementia experienced.
