A symptomof Alzheimer’s is that someone can disassociate from time and get dressed very early in the morning thinking it is much later. Circadian lighting can be beneficial, flexible lighting that represents the light of the sun - blue light in the day and red light in the evening.

Natural light provides a link to the day/night cycle which our bodies use to function properly. Access to natural light is essential. Windows should allow natural light to enter the building with the option to control glare if necessary.

As the eye ages, it requires more light to see and takes longer for the eye to adjust transitioning froma light bright space into a darker one. The adjustment time can be a factor contributing to falls and ideally a constant level of light should be maintained throughout a building. Low energy lighting is good for the environment but some types can take a long time to reach optimumoutput. Ideally illuminants that reach optimum output instantly are best. Keeping lighting levels to aminimumof 300 Lux is recommended.

Lighting that represents the light of the sun - blue light in the day and red light in the evening - also known as circadian lighting can help reduce confusion and time disorientation. Lighting that can be adjusted to suit activity or mood is useful tomeet individual preferences. Bulbs or lamps should not be exposed and should be covered by a shade to help reduce glare. Night lights can help reduce falls and accidents, especially from the bedroom to the bathroomarea. General lighting that provides even distribution is recommended. Some lighting can create strong shadows and this can cause confusion.
