COLOMBIA MEDIATION FOR PEACE
A NON˙VIOLENT CEASEFIRE THAT HELPED TURN THE TIDE IN A 52 ˙YEAR CIVIL WAR
For over half a century, Colombia was torn apart by one of the world's longest-running civil wars between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the national government. The conflict claimed over 220,000 lives and displaced 7 million people. After meeting with Gurudev in June of 2015, FARC shocked the world by announcing a unilateral ceasefire and a new commitment to the Gandhian principles of nonviolence. A year later, on June 23, 2016, the Colombian government and FARC announced a bilateral ceasefire, marking Colombia's first day of peace in over
5 decades.
