COLOMBIA MEDIATION FOR PEACE
A NONVIOLENT CEASEFIRE THAT HELPED END A 52YEAR CIVIL WAR
For over half a century, Colombia was torn apart by one of the world's longest-running civil wars between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the national government. The conflict claimed over 220,000 lives and displaced seven million people. After meeting with Gurudev in June of 2015, FARC shocked the world by announcing a unilateral ceasefire and a new commitment to the Gandhian principles of nonviolence. A year later, on June 23, 2016, the Colombian government and FARC announced a bilateral ceasefire, marking Colombia's first day of peace in over five decades.
