A connection forged in the classroom has stood the test of time, bringing two women together in the most unexpected way. Trista McWilliams, now the Executive Director at Cedarhurst of Des Peres, was just a young girl when she first encountered Margie Ackerman, her second- grade teacher at Deer Creek Elementary in Deer Creek, Illinois. In a twist of fate, their paths crossed again in September 2022 when Mrs. Ackerman moved into Cedarhurst as a resident. From the Classroom to Care at Cedarhurst A FULL-CIRCLE REUNION: Trista’s memories of her time in Mrs. Ackerman’s classroom are vivid. She recalls the special care her teacher provided when she was newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, especially when Mrs. Ackerman made sure Trista took her snack breaks or gently assisted her if she wasn’t feeling well. In a gesture of kindness that Trista will never forget, Mrs. Ackerman once drove her home for lunch after she realized Trista had forgotten hers. Decades later, Trista, now an accomplished leader in the senior living industry, was overjoyed when she discovered that Mrs. Ackerman, the teacher who had such a positive impact on her childhood, had come to live at Cedarhurst of Des Peres. Their reunion was emotional, with both women sharing memories, laughter, and even a few tears.

“She was more than just a teacher,” Trista reflected. “She was a mentor during a challenging time in my life. Having her remind me to take care of myself, knowing she was looking out for me, meant everything. Hearing her say she’s proud of the adult I’ve become was incredibly heartwarming.” Mrs. Ackerman’s influence extended beyond the walls of her classroom. She took her students on memorable field trips to her home and instilled in them a love for learning. Trista has carried these lessons with her into adulthood and now can give back. As Executive Director, she ensures Mrs. Ackerman is cared for and comfortable in her new home. “Mrs. Ackerman gave so much to me as a child. Now, I have the chance to return that care,” Trista said. Their story is a beautiful reminder of the lasting impact teachers have on our lives.
