The Bulletin: March 2020

AROUND THE CLUB March brings some wonderful activities and the hope for spring weather! We start March with a member favorite Dining Room event, Steakhouse Night. Why venture into Philadelphia for a delicious, upscale steak dinner, when you can enjoy it in the comfort of your Club? March 15th, otherwise known as Selection Sunday, kicks off the NCAA basketball tournament, March Madness. We will be hosting adult and child brackets through ESPN – be on the lookout for an email on how to register and make your selections! With Spring right around the corner, reservations are open for our traditional Easter brunch. Celebrating Easter at your Club is an easy way to get family together for a delicious meal, while having us handle the details for you! Of course, before Easter Sunday, we will be hosting our annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 11. We can’t wait to see everyone! BOOK CLUB For Tuesday, March 3rd, we have chosen Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End , Atul Gawande’s masterful exploration of aging, death and the mishandling of both by the medical community. Gawande grew up in India where both his mother and father were physicians. He saw that as people aged in India, they retained their independence and dignity and usually died in their home with their family. As a doctor, he was not educated about helping his patients with their own mortality. Physicians were taught to diagnose and treat diseases. How should we care for our loved ones who are aging? Through gripping research and sensitive stories about problems his patients and their family members encountered, Gawande enables us to see the mistakes that are sometimes made and to find better ways to deal with aging patients. He looked at caregiving places in order to see how they confront illness and death and to see if approaches such as hospice and palliative care can improve our final years. This is a book everyone should read. Join us on the 3rd at 4:00 pm in the Ladies’ Lounge as Francesca DiGuglielmo leads the discussion of this extremely important book. For April, we have chosen Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, which is the New Castle County Reads book selection for 2020. The novel describes Lee’s sweeping four- generation saga of a Korean immigrant family trying to survive in a largely hostile land. We hope we will see you at “An Evening with Min Jin Lee” on April 23rd at 7:00 pm at the Chase Center on the Riverfront where Lee will discuss her monumental epic. Our Book Club will discuss Lee’s book on Tuesday, April 7th at 4:00 pm in the Ladies’ Lounge.
