Great Conversations at YU On Sept. 3, YU welcomed Dr. Jonathan Haidt, social psychologist and No. 1 New York Times bestselling author, to the Wilf Campus for a thought-provoking conversation with Dr. Ari Berman regarding the mental health crisis facing today’s youth. Speaking before an audience of 300, Haidt drew from his latest book, The Anxious Generation , to explore the devastating consequences of raising children in an environment dominated by smartphones and social media. Haidt’s message resonated deeply with the YU community and with Dr. Berman, who praised him as a rare voice of both intellect and moral clarity. Fall Semester 2025 Kicks Off YU began the new semester with record enrollment, welcoming students from around the world to the Wilf and Beren campuses. Orientation introduced them to campus life through shiurim, academic advising, and sessions on extracurricular activities, library services and dorm life, while also offering plenty of opportunities to socialize and form new friendships. Off-campus events in Manhattan added to the excitement, and Shabbat programming strengthened bonds among classmates. Fireside Chat and Book Signing with Marcy Syms On Oct. 20, from 7–9 p.m., the Sy Syms School of Business will host a Fireside Chat and book signing with Marcy Syms, president of the Sy Syms Foundation, to celebrate the release of her new book, Leading with Respect , which shares how she and her father, Sy Syms, built the family business into a retailing powerhouse. Y U Scholars Attend Premier Forum on Jewish Studies From Aug. 4–8, YU faculty, students and alumni participated in the 19th World Congress of Jewish Studies at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the field’s largest international gathering. Held every four years, the conference brings together more than 1,000 scholars from leading universities and institutes to present new research and exchange ideas across the breadth of Judaic Studies. Among the presenters was Dr. Ephraim Kanarfogel, E. Billi Ivry University Professor of Jewish History, Literature and Law at Bernard Revel Graduate School and Stern College for Women. ins and outs of the law school application process and learn about select events scheduled throughout the academic year. • YU’s future health care professionals joined forces at the New Student Pre-Health Orientation (Sept. 10). A Warm Welcome to Our New Faculty Members This fall, the University welcomes 32 new full-time faculty members across undergraduate and graduate programs for the 2025–2026 academic year. YU COACH COUNSELS NY YANKEES DRAFT PICK
Elliot Steinmetz, head men’s basketball coach at YU, played a unique role in the Yankees’ decision to draft shortstop Core Jackson. After Jackson disclosed committing an antisemitic act as a college freshman, his agent arranged for Steinmetz to counsel him. Steinmetz described him as “a nice kid” who nonetheless lacked understanding of the historical and cultural weight of antisemitism. At Steinmetz’s suggestion, Jackson connected with Ann Squicciarini, a graduate student at YU’s Fish Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, who created and guided him through a five-week Holocaust education course. After completing the course, Jackson demonstrated remorse and growth, factors that, along with a thorough vetting process within the Yankees organiza- tion, influenced their decision to select him in the draft.
