YU COACH COUNSELS NY YANKEES DRAFT PICK
Elliot Steinmetz, head men’s basketball coach at YU, played a unique role in the Yankees’ decision to draft shortstop Core Jackson. After Jackson disclosed committing an antisemitic act as a college freshman, his agent arranged for Steinmetz to counsel him. Steinmetz described him as “a nice kid” who nonetheless lacked understanding of the historical and cultural weight of antisemitism. At Steinmetz’s suggestion, Jackson connected with Ann Squicciarini, a graduate student at YU’s Fish Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, who created and guided him through a five-week Holocaust education course. After completing the course, Jackson demonstrated remorse and growth, factors that, along with a thorough vetting process within the Yankees organiza- tion, influenced their decision to select him in the draft.
