Physical therapists are part health care professionals and part teachers. Highly trained in human anatomy and physiology, physical therapists use a variety of techniques to diagnose movement and function problems, prescribe therapy and teach a person how to continue improving and avoid injury long after they leave the office. Physical therapy is often prescribed after an injury or surgery, but it can also be an important part of the treatment plan for disabilities, work related injuries, performance enhancement and even breathing education. One of the best ways that physical therapy can help you save money is by helping you avoid surgery. It is no secret that surgeries are expensive. Physical therapists are adept at diagnosing the root problem of a person’s functional problem. Rather than looking at the symptoms (pain, discomfort, stiffness), these professionals look at what is causing the symptoms. As a result, physical therapists perform the right type, frequency, and duration of therapy, based on goals beyond the superficial symptom. For instance, someone who comes to a physical therapist with pain in their knee may begin therapy with goals to strengthen the muscles in their leg, reduce their weight, and improve their posture. In the long run, this is actually more effective than surgery, since it helps improve your overall health, rather than treating just one specific aspect of discomfort.

UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY!
Insurance terminology can be confusing. There have been several instances where our patients don’t understand their benefits because they simply don’t know what to ask their insurance providers. Below we’ve provided some definitions for some common terms that you can discuss with your insurance provider prior to scheduling an appointment: 1. What is a copay? A copayment, also referred to as a copay, is a fixed amount of money that a patient may have to pay prior to receiving a medical service. The amount of each patient’s copay is defined by their insurance company, and may vary depending on what plan you have. In some cases, copays may even be waived altogether by your insurance provider. To find out what your copay may be for physical therapy services, contact your insurance provider. We will also discuss copays with you before your first appointment. 2. What is a deductible? A deductible is a fixed amount of money that an insured patient must pay out of pocket, before the insurance company will pay any medical expenses. Much like a copay, your deductible amount will be dependent upon your insurance company, as not all insurance providers follow the same guidelines. Your insurance company will be able to tell you exactly how much your deductible is. We will also discuss deductibles with you at your first appointment, to outline how much you may have to pay before your insurance provider picks up the cost. 3. What is coinsurance? Coinsurance refers to the amount of cost that you split between your insurance provider. For example, 80/20
is a common coinsurance, in which the insurance company will pay 80% of a medical cost and the patient will pay the remaining 20%. Again, each insurance company will have a different coinsurance policy, so it is important to discuss this with them beforehand to figure out what percentage of costs you will have to pay. We will also discuss this with you at your first appointment to figure out how your percentage will play into the costs of our services. Save money and find relief today! WEDGE SALAD WITH BLUE CHEESE & HERB DRESSING
INGREDIENTS • ¾ cup crumbled blue cheese • 2/3 cup plain Greek yogurt • ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil • 2 tbsp white-wine vinegar • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard • 1 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley • 1 tbsp chopped fresh oregano • 1 medium clove garlic • ¼ tsp kosher salt • ¼ tsp ground pepper

• 6 heads lettuce • ½ cup crumbled blue cheese • 3 pieces bacon, cooked & crumbled • 2 scallions, thinly sliced
DIRECTIONS To prepare dressing: Place ¾ cup blue cheese, yogurt, oil, vinegar, mustard, parsley, oregano, garlic, salt and pepper in a blender or food processor. Blend until almost smooth. To prepare salad: Cut each head of lettuce in half lengthwise and place on a large salad plate. Dollop 2 tablespoons of the dressing over each serving and top with more blue cheese, bacon and scallions. Serve with extra dressing on the side, if desired.

Gather your family together, grab a favorite cloth item, and start making your sewn cloth mask! Things needed:

• Two 10”x6” rectangles of cotton fabric • Two 6” pieces of elastic (or rubber bands, string, cloth strips, or hair ties) • Needle and thread (or bobby pin) • Scissors • Sewing machine

STEP BY STEP PROCESS
JULY 1ST 6:30PM Rotator Cuff
1. Cut out two 10-by-6-inch rectangles of cotton fabric. Use tightly woven cotton, such as quilting fabric or cotton sheets. T-shirt fabric will work in a pinch. Stack the two rectangles; you will sew the cloth face covering as if it was a single piece of fabric. 2. Fold over the long sides ¼ inch and hem. Then fold the double layer of fabric over ½ inch along the short sides and stitch down.
You will learn: • Single worst position to sleep in that causes shoulder pain • #1 biggest mistake people make suffering from shoulder pain
• Common causes of rotator cuff problems • Top 3 exercises for the rotator cuff
3. Run a 6-inch length of 1/8-inch wide elastic through the wider hem on each side of the cloth face covering. These will be the ear loops. Use a large needle or a bobby pin to thread it through. Tie the ends tight. Don’t have elastic? Use hair ties or elastic head bands. If you only have string, you can make the ties longer and tie the cloth face covering behind your head.

4. Gently pull on the elastic so that the knots are tucked inside the hem. Gather the sides of the cloth face covering on the elastic and adjust so the cloth face covering fits your face. Then securely stitch the elastic in place to keep it from slipping.

Join us in celebrating 20 years of serving Las Cruces and El Paso. May 1st, 2020 marked 20 years in business. Southwest Sport & Spine Center, Inc. started as a 600 sq. ft office and 3 staff. We are now part of a franchise called FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers with 3 locations and 70 staff. The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged our business just like all businesses. We have not had the pleasure of caring for patients as we normally would have but, instead, we have provided essential care to those that needed it most and spent countless hours over the past 3 months preparing for what we would look like moving forward. Prepare Yourself for the Summer With These 5 Simple Tips
1. Get outside! This may seem like an obvious one, but not everyone has a strong interest in the outdoors. It can sometimes be difficult, especially on particularly hot or humid days. However, getting outside as often as you can will boost your energy levels and get you some much- needed Vitamin D. Make your way over to your local pool, peruse around nearby shops, or simply take a walk around the neighborhood to get out, get moving, and enjoy the weather! 2. Rearrange your schedule. Does your schedule leave little time to fit in physical activity? Perhaps you have a full day of commuting to and from your 9-5 job, preparing your kids for summer camps, volunteering, and acting as a chauffeur while the kids are out of school. However, even adding in 30 minutes of physical activity into your busy routine can make a big difference in helping maintain your function. Try taking a walk during your lunch break, going to the gym in the morning before making your commute, or even treating yourself to an exercise class a couple nights a week – you deserve it! 3. Get healthy for your summer team. Are you part of a summer sports team? If so, it is important to make sure you prepare your body for the upcoming season beforehand! Use this time to start training, maintaining a nutritious diet, and strengthening the necessary parts of your body. Start something new! Are you unsure about what you want to do in terms of staying active this summer? Try taking up a new hobby that’ll get you moving!
