PLANNING AHEAD Estate Planning | Probate | Guardianships for Your Life Chapters
Estate planning is not always on our minds each day. For many people, estate planning is a difficult topic to talk about or even think about. They might be afraid to imagine a world where they’ve passed away or become incapacitated. Others might believe they are too young or healthy to consider an estate plan. However, there’s nothing to be afraid of when it comes to estate planning. It’s one of the best ways to gain peace of mind about the future, and everyone should have an estate plan, regardless of age, income, and health status. Between Oct. 21 and 27, we recognize National Estate Planning Awareness Week! This is a time for those without estate plans to create one and those who already have one to make sure it has been updated. We shouldn’t wait on this, either! Tomorrow is never guaranteed, so we need to make sure all our affairs are in order today to protect our future and loved ones. Still don’t think it’s necessary to have an estate plan? Here are two reasons everyone should have one! An estate plan keeps probate out of the picture. You likely want your loved ones to have ample time to grieve after you’ve passed away, but that’s not always possible if they have to go to probate to determine who gets what assets. Without an estate plan, your loved ones will have to attend probate court, which can be an expensive, stressful, and time-consuming process. In most cases, probate requires lawyers and court fees, which can take a considerable chunk of the money within the estate. If that’s not enough, family infighting can break out when desired assets do not go to those who may have wanted them. Through estate planning, you can protect your future. Many people associate estate planning with wills and last testaments, but much more is involved. Additionally, you can name health care and financial powers of attorney, which enables someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you ever become incapacitated. A proper estate plan will also allow you to designate a guardian for your minor children if something were to happen to you. These are only a few of the many benefits that come with estate planning. MEDIEVAL MISCHIEF-MAKERS The Antics of Court Jesters
Historical references to these “fools” became more common between the 12th and 15th centuries, with the term “jester” gaining popularity in the 15th and 16th centuries. Jesters: Entertainers and Advisors While the jester’s primary role was to entertain royalty through stories, music, acrobatics, and flatulence, they were also often highly intelligent advisors. Jesters could critique political decisions and social norms under the guise of humor, providing valuable feedback to the nobility. They even accompanied soldiers to the battlefield, distracting the enemy and delivering dangerous messages. The Evolving Jester By the 17th century, as live theater was booming, jesters began transitioning
from to professional actors and comedians. Figures like Richard Tarlton, the beloved jester of Queen Elizabeth I, became renowned performers in their own right. As jesters found fame outside the court, they paved the way for generations of comedians, satirists, and performance artists. court entertainers Though the court jester institution largely died out by the 18th century, the legacy of these multifaceted performers lives on. From Shakespearean fools to modern stand-up comedians, the spirit of the court jester continues to entertain, provoke, and enlighten audiences. So, the next time you see a fool in a pointy hat, remember the rich history and complexity behind this enduring archetype.
We enjoy card games.
When we think of court jesters, we often picture colorfully clad figures in pointed hats dancing and jesting for the entertainment of royalty. However, these medieval performers’ roles and responsibilities were far more complex than today’s caricatures. The Origins of Court Jesters We can trace the court jester’s roots to the comedic actors of ancient Rome. As the Roman Empire cracked down on these outspoken performers, many became traveling entertainers, sowing the seeds for the Middle Ages and Renaissance court jesters.
Charlie Munger’s Timeless Wisdom YOUR GUIDE TO A HAPPY AND FULFILLING LIFE
While we all have unique goals, most of us aim to live a long and happy life. Last year, Charlie Munger, the former vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and a multibillionaire, passed away at 99. He continuously gave sage advice to those who sought it, and in 2019, he provided listeners with an insight into his positive outlook on life during an interview with CNBC. Here are six of his tips for a long and happy life. Limit your envy: Enviously observing other people’s possessions, relationships, qualities, or luck can quickly deteriorate your mental well- being and give you a sour outlook on your own life. Don’t resent others: There will be individuals in your life who do you
wrong and cause hardship. You can spend the next few decades resenting them for their actions, or you can let it go, choosing not to let it affect your life. Don’t spend more than you have: Money might not be the key to happiness, but you still need it to live your life to the fullest. If you’re constantly spending and paying off credit card debt, you’ll have a hard time raising funds for activities that bring you joy. Keep your spirits high: When bad things happen to us, we may want to sink down and hide, but we shouldn’t let our troubles interfere with our lives and happiness. Stay cheerful and push through the obstacles.

Fill your inner circle with reliable people: You need people who will stand by your side and fight for you when needed. Avoid toxic personalities; instead, surround yourself with those you can trust. Don’t be afraid to eat some candy: It’s Halloween, so let’s live a little! Charlie Munger once said, “I’m eating this good peanut brittle. That’s what you want to do if you want to live to be 99.”

Supercharge Your Memory
Neuroscience-Backed Tips for a Sharper Mind
In today’s fast-paced world, having a sharp and reliable memory has become more critical than ever. Fortunately, recent advancements in neuroscience have revealed new techniques to help us improve our cognitive abilities and retain information more effectively. Here are four scientifically backed tips to transform your memory and unlock your full potential. Exercise your brain and body. Numerous studies have shown that regular physical exercise can profoundly impact cognitive function. When you engage in aerobic activities such as running,
cycling, or swimming, you improve your cardiovascular health and stimulate the growth of the hippocampus — the area of the brain responsible for learning and memory formation. Meditate for a sharper mind.
Take a Break
Peaceful day at Floyd Lamb Park.
Did you know mindfulness and meditation can improve your memory? Researchers have discovered that individuals who practice meditation regularly, even just a few minutes a day, exhibit increased brain volume in the hippocampus, resulting in enhanced memory performance. Nourish your brain with the right fuel. The saying “you are what you eat” is true for brain health. A diet rich in low-sugar, low-refined carbs and healthy protein and fat sources can support optimal cognitive function. These foods provide the building blocks your brain needs to keep your memory sharp and thinking clear. Practice improves memory. Practicing regularly is one of the most effective ways to improve your memory. Whether memorizing song lyrics, reciting poetry, or even just trying to recall your daily tasks, the more you challenge your brain to store and retrieve information, the better it will become. So, what are you waiting for? Start exercising, meditating, fueling your brain, and practicing today — your future self will thank you.

CODY’S CORNER THE UNEXPECTED MAGIC OF SMALL MOMENTS
There’s nothing quite like going for a walk in the fresh air, enjoying a delicious treat, and getting some hugs from my favorite people in the world. While I’d love to visit the
beach one day or go on a hike through a forest, I’m just as happy doing some of my favorite activities at home. It’s all about enjoying the little things in life! The kids were telling me about this wonderful tradition at school each October. On Mondays, they come home with a form saying “Hocus Pocus, It’s Time to Focus.” Mom fills it out and the kids turn it in. Then each Friday, they get a special treat. They get so excited about it! It shows how much joy the little things can bring us. Maybe I can convince them to give me an extra treat or two on Fridays this month, too!
What little things in your life bring you joy? I love greeting the kids, chewing their toys, and running all around the room during bedtime stories. Mom says seeing the kids smile or our tails wagging warms her heart for days. Grandma always told Mom that life is in the simple things. Maybe for you, it’s watching the sunrise with a fresh cup of coffee The little things in life are precious and shouldn’t be overlooked. Savor the little things that bring you joy.
