Byergo Angus Established in 1950 75th Anniversary
As we turn the calendar to 2025, we are celebrating the 75th anniversary of Byergo Angus. This milestone provides an opportunity to reflect on the history and success of our business. I want to express my gratitude to all those who have contributed to our journey over the years. Let’s take a moment to look back on some of Byergo Angus’s most unforgettable moments. Thank you for being part of our story.
FIRST SALE AD FOR OUR INAUGURAL SALE IN 1976.
BYERGO BLACK REVOLUTION 36
1 BYERGO ANGUS
75 YEARS OF
The ’60s were a great time of growth for both Forrest Byergo’s family and the cowherd. Byergo Angus would consign their first animals to consignment sales, including the Nodaway County sale which was a booming event. Education was always a vital part of Forrest’s life, which he instilled in his family and cowherd. Forrest was an MU graduate and all eight of his children were college graduates with two sons being doctors of veterinary medicine. ‘60s
Where it all began. In 1950, the late Forrest Byergo purchased “Elia of South Oaks” and her two daughters, thus beginning Byergo Angus Farms. From these three females, Byergo Angus would grow their herd. Over the last seven decades, tens of thousands of offspring around the globe trace back to “Elia of South Oaks.” ‘50s Forrest would always say, “Just got Lucky.” But I would venture to say it was a much more calculated vision. Up until 1950, Grandpa had Hereford cows; he was frustrated with their problems. This is when he got the opportunity to purchase “Elia of South Oaks.” She was 6 years old at the time, being born in 1944. She was the ideal, problem-free cow: Great mother, Fertile, Easy-Fleshing, and Powerful. The growing family would move back to the homeplace in 1952. Like many families, the “Great Depression” had taken almost everything from Emmet Byergo (Forrest’s father). A great aunt was able to hold on to the homeplace and Forrest was able to buy it back by saving up. While serving in the Navy and post war, he taught new farming practices through a GI program. Andy (Dad) was a week old at the time they moved back to the homeplace.
BYERGO 36 PROPHET
The ’70’s would be the explosion of Byergo Angus on a national scene. At the urging of Andy, Forrest’s son, Byergo Angus would start participating in bull performance sales and test stations and they would also start showing their cattle. Andy Byergo would learn to AI, which would take the program to a new level. 1975 - Byergo Angus would get the break they had been working for. Homer Milikan would stop by the farm to look at the show steers. During his visit he saw a bull in the pasture, “Byergos Black Revolution 36.” He told Forrest he would buy a steer if he could take the bull and show him. Later we would learn that he dropped the steer off and sold him at the local stockyards. The first show for “36” was a county show. Homer called with the results from the first show. “4th in his class,” Homer said. “Out of how many?” Forrest would ask. Homer replied, “4.” Forrest, at this time, said bring the bull home and we’ll turn him out. Homer asked Forrest to give him one more chance, to let him take him to the National Western in Denver. He said that the county judge just wasn’t ready for how much different 36 was. At the urging of his son, Andy, Forrest reluctantly gave in and said take him to Denver. Four short months later at the 1976 National Western Stock Show, judge Herman Purdy would choose Byergo Black Revolution 36 as a division champion. A major feat at the time. ‘70s
The next day, Loren Schlipf from Tree Lane Farms would show up at Forrest’s doorstep offering $17,000 for 2/3 interest in the bull, a price that was unthinkable to Forrest at the time. Only 10 short years before, Byergo Angus had sold their first $300 bull, a maternal brother to 36. My, how things had changed. Byergos Black Revolution 36 would go on to be the number 2 bull in the breed for registrations in 1980 and 1981. Along with number 9 in 1982 and number 11 in 1979, later Jim Gillooly and Herman Purdy would buy an interest for Stampede Farms in Canada. This would lay the framework for years to come. 1976- Byergo Angus held their first production sale on November 29, 1976. 1979- Byergo Angus and Wayview Farms would sell 1/3 interest in “Byergo Prophet” for $40,000. He would go on to have a stellar show career, including Grand Champion at the 1979 Louisville show.

BYERGO “ELIA” IMPACT
The ’80s would see the leadership officially change to Andy as he took ownership. Byergo Angus would continue to flourish. The ’80s were a tough time in agriculture. Grit, determination
‘80s
and ingenuity (and maybe stubbornness) were a big part of the ’80s, but Byergo Angus never strayed from the base of good Power Maternal cows to stay the course. The ’80s would see continued advancements with the start of embryo transplant. 1980 - C.K. Allen would buy “Byergo Miss Revolution 187R” for $15,000. 187R would never disappoint as she was a stalworth for the Woodland program for years. 187R is also the 4th dam of “Cupcake 8900.” 1983 - “Byergos Kodiak”- would sell ½ interest and no possession for $35,000 to Kodiak Associates. 1985 - Jim Gillooly would buy “Byergo Miss Elia 189B” for $7500. 1988 - Harmony Hill Farms would buy “Byergo Miss Moriah” for $7500.
ANDY BYERGO WITH THE BULLS
The ’90s were, again, a big decade for Byergo Angus as we continued to install new technologies. We started Ultrasound scanning for carcass quality and started our first feed
‘90s
efficiency testing. 1991 - “Byergo Miss Moriah 2” would be the talk of the show season as she won the Missouri State Fair. 1992 - Byergo Angus competed in Test Stations at Northwest Missouri State University. The test station would instill one of the first Feed Efficiency system. Thus, our Feed Efficiency testing for profit began. 1996 - “Byergo Miss Elia 5085” would captivate the audiences with her beauty. “5085” would produce Byergo Picasso (the grandsire of Black Magic) as a 2-year-old. She continues to show up in the pedigrees in a lot of the great ones. 1999 - “Byergo Cupcake 8900” would turn every head in the barn. She was the crowd favorite everywhere she went and concluded her show career as a Division champion at the American Royal which was a national point show. 1999 - In November of 1999, Byergo Angus would have their first sale at the new barn at the Savannah location.
DREW BYERGO WINNING SILVER PITCHER AWARD
The ’00s would continue to see advancement at Byergo Angus with the investment in a feed efficiency testing system and the start of DNA testing.
‘00s
2001 - “Byergo Fullcut 9700” would win the Circle A Sire Alliance for carcass profitably, selling for ½ interest for $16,000 and being leased to ABS Global. 2003 - Byergo Angus would invest in a Growsafe system at Green Springs Bull Test to feed efficiency test their bulls. 2004 - Forrest Byergo is inducted into the Missouri Angus Hall of Fame. 2004 - Drew Byergo wins the Silver Pitcher at the National Junior Angus Show with his two heifers and bull: “Byergo Miss Elia 3390,” “Byergo Miss Cupcake 3600,” and “Byergo Sitting Bull 3600.” 2007 - Byergo Big Time 5910 is the Champion at Missouri State Fair. 2008 - Byergo LoIn-HiOut wins the Test Station at Green Springs converting 4.2 to 1, an unthinkable feat at the time.

75 YEARS OF BYERGO “ELIA” IMPACT
The ’10s would be a huge decade for Byergo Angus. A decade that would see record-setting sales and the use of Byergo Angus genetics globally.
‘10s
2012 - Byergo Angus Farms is the first family farm to ever have a bull sale average over $4,000 in the state of Missouri. 2014 - “Byergo Andy 0115” is on display in the Yards at the National Western Stock Show. Later that year, his sons would out-average all other sire groups by more than $1,000 a bull in the record-breaking 2014 Byergo Sale. 2015 - The Byergo brothers open up Byergo Angus Beef Shop in June of 2015, leading the way in farm-to-table sales and helping countless customers market direct to consumers. 2017 - Byergo Black Magic 3348 takes the world by storm. Tom Burke would call him “The hottest bull there has ever been and the hottest bull there will ever be.” He would be bought by David Horton at Friendship Farms and ABS Global and go on to be a top 10 Sire for registrations within the breed. 2017 - Byergo Titus 6340 - In October 2017, Titus would become the highest valued bull ever sold at Byergo Angus at $117,000. 2018 - February 17, 2018. A day to remember. Byergo Boomer 6351 would become the newest highest valued bull ever at Byergo Angus, selling to Soaring Eagle for a valuation of $140,000. Byergo Blackstone would sell for $42,000 to Double G Angus. Byergo Elegance 7538 would be valued at $62,000, selling to Friendship Farms, and Byergo Elia 6347 would sell for $44,000 to Ankony Angus. Five Black Magic daughters would average $43,000 and 12 Black Magic sons would bring from $10,000-$140,000. In addition, embryos by the great “Elia 2834” would bring $3,700 a piece, signaling a new era in embryo prices and completely changing how they are sold within the industry. 2019 - In the Spring of 2019, a Feed Efficiency system was installed on the farm. Thus, we could do all of our Feed Efficiency testing on the farm. 2019 - On October 12, Grimmius Cattle buys Byergo Exoneration for $27,000 and Alta Genetics buys Byergo Titanium for $21,000.

EPDs – How to read the Byergo Sale Book
CED - Calving Ease Direct - This is an EPD to look at when choosing a bull for heifers. The higher the number, the easier calving the bull is. 7 and up is good for heifers. BEPD - Birth Weight EPD - A number to look at for birth weight. The lower the number, the lighter the birthweight is expected to be. We typically consider any number under 2.0 fine for heifers. Bulls that are in the 2’s, 3’s, 4’s and 5’s are great for cows. Remember as a breed, Angus calve easily. The difference between a 1 and 6 is 5 lbs. at birth. Start selecting the higher BW bulls for your cows. It will make you more money. WEPD - Weaning Weight EPD - This is the EPD you look at for weaning weights. The higher the number, the better. Remember, breed average is +61. Anything above +68 is in the top 25% of the breed. Growth is a must to make this sale. YEPD - Yearling Weight EPD - This is the EPD you look at for yearling weights. The higher the number, the better. Remember, breed average is +108. We take great pride in our bulls’ growing ability. RADG - The residual average daily gain is the feed efficiency EPD we look at. We consider anything above a +.25 as being good. The higher the number the better.
DMI - Dry Matter Intake, expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of differ- ence in transmitting ability for feed intake during the post-weaning phase, compared to that of other sires. Anything below 1.5 is good. Lower is better. MILK - The Milk EPD is something to look at if you are retaining heifers. The
higher the number, the more they are expected to milk. CW - The carcass weight EPD. The higher the better. MARB - The marbling EPD. The higher the better.
RE - The ribeye EPD. The higher the better. Fat - The fat EPD. The lower the better. BWT - The actual birth weight. ADJ. 205 - The adjusted weaning weight. We are very proud of our power. Pounds equal money! Beef Value $B - an index value expressed in dollars per head; is the expect- ed average difference in future progeny performance for post weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. The higher the number the better. Feed Efficiency FE - Average Conversion for the industry is a 6.5 - Lower is better. Byergo Bulls average a 5.0.

WHY FEED EFFICIENCY? We feel that efficiency in all aspects of agriculture is going to be the key ingredient to success going forward. Cattle are no different. It has long been a trait that has been overlooked in the cattle industry. One of the factors being that it is so expensive to test for. At Byergo Angus we have made the decision that no matter the cost, we must collect this data for our customers. The commercial cowman cannot chance it, you just cannot buy bulls that haven’t been feed efficiency tested. As we look at feed efficiency, there are buzzwords that just seem to cloud the goal of the rancher. We have looked at a couple different buzzwords in the industry, RFI and DMI. They are confusing and as we examined these calculations, we found that RFI too many times identifies non-doers while DMI EPD is skewed too much towards no performance. Then we examined RADG (Residual Average Daily Gain) which looks at how an animal gains in comparison to the expected intake. We have found this to be the best EPD for Feed Efficiency at this point. With that said, we still wanted to do better. That’s why when we looked at all the data, we decided to not overthink the process. We asked, “What is efficiency to our customers?” The answer became clear--FEED CONVERSION and COST OF GAIN. By looking at conversion, we can still keep the dry matter intake in consideration while finding performance animals. Also, by doing this we are not picking a type and kind to be the most efficient but rather just following the data. SIMPLY PUT-THE ANIMALS THAT CONVERT THE BEST ARE THE MOST EFFICIENT! We have also seen in our cowherd that daughters of bulls that converted the best have been our longest lasting, fleshiest, most fertile cows. What will Feed Efficiency do for you? If you finish your cattle, you will save money and your bottom line will improve (in fact, this is the single most important factor whether you make money, yes, even more important than grid premiums). Days on feed, conversion, and quality pounds is where you make money feeding cattle. Also note, even if you sell your calves at the stockyards, somebody is feeding them and tracking them. If you retain females, this is where the most money can be saved in feed costs each year. We have also found that daughters out of the best converting bulls stay fleshier, are more fertile (probably because they are fleshier) and last longer. It is common sense: they convert grass to pounds easier so they are healthier, therefore last longer. How to read the sale book for efficiency? A special note is that industry average for conversion is around 6.5 to 1. AT BYERGO ANGUS - THE SALE BULLS AVERAGED 4.9 to 1. We have 0 bulls that are below industry average; we credit this to generations of selecting sires that convert well. It’s genetic! Each sale bull that has been feed efficiency tested has a chart with the following information:
Feed Conversion
Money Saved vs. Industry Average Feed Conversion Ratio
4.27
81.59
129.02
Conversion is the pounds eaten to pound gained. Lower is better. 6.5 to 1 is industry average. BYERGO BULLS AVERAGED 4.9 to 1.
Conversion ratio is a ratio compared to the other animals they were weaned with. (You can only compare feed efficiency within groups of cattle that have been together their whole life.) The higher the ratio, the better they did within their contemporary group. 100 is average. Anything above 100 is above average and on up. Cost of gain is how much it costs to put on a pound. The lower the better. Dollar saved is the savings to put on 600 lbs vs industry average.

Way #2 you can save by buying a Feed Efficiency tested Sire Backgrounding calves It has been proven that it pays to wean your calves for 45-60 days before selling them. When you look at conversion, it is easy to see Sires vary drastically in their daily conversion cost. Let’s do some math. o Sire A (a bull not bred for feed efficiency) has calves put a cost of gain on for .90 cents per pound. o Sire B (a Feed Efficiency tested sire) has calves put a cost of gain on for .60 cents per pound. o A difference of .30 cents per pound gain on calves that are averaging a 3 lbs/per day gain. o That equals $.90 per day per calf. o For 60 days that ends up being $54 per calf savings. o If both bulls sire 25 calves that ends up being $1350 that Sire B saved you versus Sire A in one calf crop. Very easy to see the Value in Sire B, the Feed Efficiency tested sire.
