I went back to work at the dress shop. I remem- ber asking Herman for money to go to work. It was the first time I ever felt the need to ask anyone else for money and it felt strange. He gave me thir- ty dollars and I told him that was far too much. But the real issue was my realization that I was no longer an independent working woman but now half of a married couple and that decisions about how money was spent would be shared from then on.

tests. He was very sick and, as a result, very cranky and moody. Needless to say our honeymoon was cut short and we never made it to New York. As a young bride I had no idea what was going on with Herman. I just thought he was tan. But his mother immediately recognized that her son was seriously ill. What I thought was a tan his moth- er knew was jaundice, caused by something more serious than a bad cold. So, for the first few weeks of our marriage, we slept in separate rooms at opposite ends of the hall- way. There were moments when I wondered what I had gotten myself into.
