Dorothy - A Life in Stories, 2023

Central Park at midnight waiting for his uncle to show up. That’s dangerous. Stephen put me through an even scarier expe- rience. The same fraternity was going to Washing- ton, DC. In fact Herman was president of SAR when he was a youngster. Stephen wanted to go and his best friend, Ira Rose, was also going. Again, against my better judgment, I gave my permission. I was shaking as Stephen told the story. John Wayne Gacy was in the news at the time; he had murdered over thirty young boys and buried them in his basement. I thought, you just never know – you let your kids join good organizations, take supervised trips, and still these things happen. Parents can’t be too careful. When Stephen got home he told this tale. Ira and Stephen got permission to leave the group. So much for supervision. They wound up at the zoo. While they were at the zoo 5 young boys started following them. So they left the zoo and started to walk quickly away. Suddenly from behind one of these hoodlum runs up and from behind throws a punch into Stephen’s eye. He was knocked uncon- scious by the blow for a moment. He come home with quite a shiner. This is why my hair is white. Fortunately, by this time, the boys are getting nervous and leave without any incident. OFF TO COLLEGE You would think that I would have been prepared

be closely supervised and that some of the parents would also attend. So I let Frank go. I got a telephone call from Frank while he was in New York to ask if he could contact my younger brother, his Uncle Allen. Uncle Allen was consid- ered a cool guy on the basis of his very large motor- cycle. I said sure go ahead. Allen walked into the hotel where the boys were staying wearing a bright orange jacket deco- rated with military buttons in what seemed like an Oriental or Russian style. Frank proudly intro- duced him to his fraternity brothers. Allen prompt- ly offered to give Frank and his friends a ride on his motorcycle. They went to Central Park. It was about eleven o’clock at night. Allen gave Frank a ride around the park and then dropped him off while he took Frank’s friends for a ride. Now maybe if you aren’t a parent that doesn’t sound dangerous but when I sent Frank to New York City I didn’t imagine him hanging around

Our friends from the Cherry Hill social club. On vacation together at Grossinger’s Hotel in the Catskills. Jenny Grossinger in the center to the left of Dorothy. We alternatively met at each couples homes and had the best of times together. I wish I had that social life today.
